Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall's 50th Anniversary Celebration is Rescheduled for Opening Night of COME FROM AWAY

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has announced that the theater's newly rescheduled 50th Anniversary Celebration will take place on opening night of the award-winning Broadway musical, Come From Away. The show, making its Sarasota debut, opens on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.

The FSU/Asolo Conservatory will start 2020 with the surprisingly delightful Gruesome Playground Injuries, a contemporary play by 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Rajiv Joseph. Ashley Teague directs the story of two people and the unique relationship they build over a lifetime of injuries, both physical and emotional. This sharp-witted and dark comedy will run from January 1 - 19, in the Cook Theatre with a pay-what-you-can (minimum $5) preview night on December 31.

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) opens its annual Stage III Series with The Nether by Jennifer Haley, a dark, futuristic play exploring the moral, ethical, and legal implications of virtual reality. Called a?oeRelentlessly grippinga?? by TimeOut London and a?oeGasp-worthya?? by The New York Times, this thrilling drama imagines a digital world that provides its users with total sensory immersion and no rules: The Nether. When Detective Morris discovers a?oeThe Hideaway,a?? a secret realm within The Nether offering its visitors a disturbing brand of entertainment, she launches an investigation into the complex morality of the digital world. Winner of the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and nominated for the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Play, The Nether will run in FST's Bowne's Lab Theatre starting January 15.

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall regrets to announce that Il Divo's performance on Sunday, January 5, 2020 has been canceled and is being rescheduled for Friday, January 15, 2021. One of the members of the group is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. He is currently unable to walk, and his doctors are not allowing him to travel from Europe due to his injury.
FST's Suffragist Project Highlights Intersectionality Of Social Movements

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) presents The Rights of It All, a community conversation presented as part of FST's Suffragist Project. A Co-presentation of the Boxser Diversity Initiative and FST, this event will examine ways the movements behind women's suffrage, LGBTQ+ rights, and women's rights intersect. This panel discussion will take place on January 7, 2020 in FST's Gompertz Theatre at 5PM. It is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Big Bang Improv Returns to Sarasota for Special Residency

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) has announced that Big Bang Improv, a Sarasota Improv Festival favorite, will return to Sarasota the first weekend of January 2020 for a special residency. During their time at FST, the group will perform two improv comedy shows and lead two workshops. Big Bang performances will take place on Friday, January 3 and Saturday, January 4 at 7:30PM in FST's Bowne's Lab Theatre. Tickets are just $15-18 and can be purchased at floridastudiotheatre.org or (941) 366-9000. Improv workshops will be held on January 4 and enrollment is just $35. WAITRESS Makes Its Sarasota Debut At The Van Wezel

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall will present the Sarasota premiere of WAITRESS for a limited three-day engagement! The diner opens up on Friday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, January 26 with a total of five performances. Attendees will even have the opportunity to purchase pies at the hall while supplies last. Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts that mirror her topsy-turvy life such as 'The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie' and 'Betrayed By My Eggs Pie.' When a baking contest in a nearby county - and a satisfying encounter with someone new - show Jenna a chance at a fresh start, she must find the courage to seize it. Change is on the menu, as long as Jenna can write her own perfectly personal recipe for happiness.

The tour bus for the Nebraska Theatre Caravan production of A Christmas Carol was in an accident near Waterville, ME on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 11:30 p.m. EST. No critical injuries were sustained. The bus was owned and operated by Arrow Stage Lines. After collecting information and feedback from the cast and crew, Nebraska Theatre Caravan has decided to cancel the remaining dates of the national tour, including the Sarasota performance on Monday, December 23 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
