Regional Reviews
All Regional Reviews ›Shakespeare veteran Dame Harriet Walter talks about the Bard in a reverent tone, but she doesn’t let him off the hook. After all, the Succession and Killing Eve star has built her latest book – She Speaks! What Shakespeare’s Women Might Have Said – around the idea that despite being a great observer of what makes us human, Shakespeare never gave his women the same depth and attention as his men.
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, otherwise known as the Trocks, are back at Sadler’s Wells as part of their National tour of a mixed bill until 6 May. Post-show I think I might be losing my sense of humour…but thankfully most of the Sadler’s Wells audience seemed happy!
Director Meyer keeps things moving at a fair clip without ever seeming rushed, and he serves up real scares.
What did our critic think of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at Burlington County Footlighters?
Hamilton is the room where it happens—a history remix that’s not throwing away its shot at dazzling you with rhyme, rhythm, and revolution. Founding fathers trade powdered wigs for mic drops as ambition rises faster than the tempo, and duels come with both pistols and punchlines. This production of Hamilton will be performing at the Fisher theatre now through May 17th.
Nowadays when you tune in to watch the news or read the latest headline in your social media feed, it’s difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction. Furthermore, there is no middle ground, and everything is described as a superlative—like the “least” effective or the “most” offensive.
Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Cristina Alicea for Vermont Stage, is a relevant play about the dangers of conformity and anger in times of change. Originally written as part of the “Theatre of the Absurd” movement in 1959, the play follows Berenger, a kind-hearted drunk who works at a local newspaper, as he navigates his life during an outbreak of people turning into Rhinoceros. The production opened at Main Street Landing on April 30th and runs until May 17th.
After being forced to miss Oz Arts Nashville’s last two entries in their “A Cultural Revelation” season, I was more than pleased to return. For this season, productions from around the world are presented in the Oz space, introducing audiences to art forms that they can’t find just anywhere. It was here that I got to enjoy The Ecstatic.
Aguardiente is the name of a firey drink from Colombia that’s sugary and strong. So it’s also a good name for the world premiere musical comissioned for the 50th anniversary season of GALA Hispanic Theatre in Columbia Heights.
Even 400 pages or more cannot contain whole life, nor the personality
There was something in the air on Friday night…and it wasn't just pollen! One could describe it as the school show of all school shows - but that might be doing it a disservice. Enter the room AUGMENTED: Dance powered by MAM + AISOMA, a collaboration between Juilliard, Rambert School and Studio Wayne McGregor.
What did our critic think of MAMMA MIA! at Conway High School?
What did our critic think of AN ASIAN AMERICAN DANCE JOURNEY, PROGRAM B at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company?
Central Arkansas is blessed with so many talented people (musicians, actors, directors, educators, etc.), and I am thrilled to be able to call them my friends. There are so many great shows in the spring, and unfortunately I can't go see them all, even when I squeeze in dress rehearsals.
The air at New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park is thick with the scent of high-end buffet favorites and the electric hum of a sold-out crowd. The curtain has risen on a revival of the 1960s Broadway classic Cactus Flower, and if the opening week's standing ovations are any indication, Kansas City has another bona fide hit on its hands.
Nearly 40 years after its Broadway premiere, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA continues to cast its spell. I saw proof of that everywhere at the packed Keller Auditorium, including a young girl clutching a teddy bear wearing a tiny Phantom mask. The now and future PHANTOM fandom is in excellent hands.
Actor/writer Tami Workentin wrote the play (her first) for herself and her real life husband, James Pickering. The jokes (with a bit of music and history thrown in) can fast and furious,. You could almost hear the rim shot.
Una comedia del siglo de oro español escrita por Ana Caro de Mallén, que en manos de Paola Izquierdo se convierte en un manifiesto feminista profundamente contemporáneo, lleno de carcajadas y magia.
What did our critic think of GEM OF THE OCEAN at Actors' Shakespeare Project?
La tercer entrega del Proyecto Espiral de la Compañía Nacional de Teatro nos acerca al ciclo interminable de violencia y venganza de manera contundente, feroz y profundamente actual. Héctor Mendoza?
