As Freed is one of the nation's most lauded and respected new playwrights, Artists Rep is fortunate to host the inaugural production of this play. The Monster-Builder is directed by the esteemed and award-winning Art Manke and features a noteworthy West Coast cast.

Artists Rep will present the Northwest premiere of The Motherfucker With the Hat by Stephen Aldy Guirgis, from February 25 through March 30. This hard-hitting, comedic play premiered on Broadway in 2011 starring Chris Rock, making his Broadway debut as Ralph D. and was directed by Anna D. Shapiro. Kevin Jones will direct Artists Rep's production starring Victor Mack as Ralph D. The Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Play, and is currently one of the Top 10 most produced plays in the country.

Wendy has been on Portland stages since the mid-1970s, and was the first supporting actress recognized by the Drammy Award Committee (known then as the Willie Awards) in 1979! She is best known for her 1982 musical, Soph! The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, a show she performed here and toured throughout the west coast with a two year stint in Los Angeles. In 1992 Wendy returned to the Portland stage with her one-woman show, Recovering from Myself(ves).

He offered his actual heart to the mail carrier, but she ran away screaming. Now he's taken out an ad and pinned his hopes on the annual Cupid's Ball. Will the girl of his dreams be waiting for him by the punch bowl?

Part of the fun is figuring out what's going to happen and where the whole thing is headed. It took me until intermission to figure things out, as Freed throws a big surprise at the audience right before the act break that tells us once and for all what we're watching.

PROFILE THEATRE has announced the titles for its 2014 In Dialogue Staged Reading Series, a program intended to explore and augment the mainstage season of plays by Sam Shepard. The plays are HUNGRY by Amy Claussen, BUENA VISTA by Edith Freni, and A LIE OF THE MIND by Sam Shepard. The readings will each have two performances, held at Profile's new home at Artists Repertory Theatre. Tickets are currently on sale at Profiletheatre.org.

The Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 2014 preview performances begin February 14, and the season will open Friday night, February 21 in the Angus Bowmer Theatre with Shakespeare's The Tempest (director, Tony Taccone). On Saturday, Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window (Juliette Carrillo) takes the stage, as does the classic Marx Brothers musical The Cocoanuts (David Ivers), and Sunday afternoon Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors (Kent Gash) opens in the Thomas Theatre.

Inukshuk Production Company and the Portland Q Center have announced their joint entry for the 2014 Fertile Ground Festival: Tennessee in Key West, an original play by Robert Lee Gaynor; directed by Marybeth Bielawski-DeLeo. In this fictional piece inspired by the life of Tennessee Williams, a young reporter travels to Key West to interview the illustrious playwright, and soon realizes he is in over his head when the playwright imposes unusual requirements in exchange for answers to questions.
