BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at Barrington Stage Company is a Delightful Journey Well W Photo BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at Barrington Stage Company is a Delightful Journey Well Worth Going On.
by Marc Savitt - Jun 26, 2019

INTO THE WOODS opened on Broadway over 30 years ago. It has since been revived several times, adapted into a Disney Film, and presented by countless regional and community theatres as well as school groups. If you are thinking, "been there - done that" and there is no reason to see this presentation at BSC you are certainly not alone (no one is, after all) but I believe you are mistaken.

BWW Review: Signature Theatre's SPUNK Lacks, Well… Spunk Photo BWW Review: Signature Theatre's SPUNK Lacks, Well… Spunk
by Sam Abney - May 13, 2019

I've never been disappointed by a show at Signature Theatre. Even their ongoing Grand Hotel, which is working with some less-than-stellar source material, is elevated by the wonderful craftsmanship and talented artists this theater welcomes. The same can unfortunately not be said of the disappointing Spunk, which opened in Signature's more intimate ARK theater on Friday. Zora Neale Hurston's masterful prose falls flat in a production that feels like it opened too soon, resulting in an evening lacking in the gumption this show tries to champion.

BWW Review: MASTERPIECES OF THE ORAL AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE OF HUMANITY at Signature Photo BWW Review: MASTERPIECES OF THE ORAL AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE OF HUMANITY at Signature Theatre
by Elliot Lanes - Mar 11, 2019

Sometimes a particular genre of theater isn't necessarily popular with a general audience. Theater of the Absurd might be the biggest example of this. Playwrights like Eugene Ionesco and others have left audiences scratching their heads for years as to what they were trying to say within their plays.

THE HEIRESS is playing at Arena Stage in Washington, DC through March 10, 2019. Finding one's voice is never easy. Socially awkward and plain Catherine Sloper has struggled her entire life under the disapproving and resentful gaze of her father. It is the unexpected visit from a suitor full of sincerity and instantaneous devotion that awakens Catherine's long abandoned hopes of true love and the opportunity for a fresh start. A devastating betrayal forces the scorned Catherine to learn how to roar, realize her truth and take control of her destiny.

Arena Stage presents Ruth and Augustus Goetz's melodrama, The Heiress, suggested by the Henry James novel, Washington Square. After growing up subjected to her father's disinterest and strong resentment, a young woman in the 1850s discovers what love is in her journey towards independence, growth and strength, without an impactful female role model in her life. Directed by Deputy Artistic Director Seema Sueko, The Heiress runs February 8 - March 10, 2019 in the Fichandler Stage.
