BWW Review: MATILDA at Fairfield Center Stage
by Sean Fallon - Oct 12, 2019

Opening night of Roald Dahl's MATILDA, as presented by Fairfield Center Stage, at Fairfield Ludlowe High School Auditorium yielded a large audience with profound applause.  With book by Dennis Kelly and music & lyrics by Tim Minchin, numerous differences from the Roald Dahl book or movie adaptation can be found in the stage production.   Perhaps the most spectacular of these is seeing an object on stage appear to move by itself, and writing on a board seeming to magically appear, concepts that can be written about or adapted to screen, but in those formats can never quite mesmerize people to the degree that these meticulously performed stage effects dazzled the live audience in this production.

by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Oct 9, 2019

As the first familiar notes of 'The Candy Man' wafts across the audience in Carol Morsani Hall, I feel a strong sense of nostalgia. I grew up watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on television and am curious how a show with so many special effects could translate to the stage.

BWW Review: LETTERS LIVE, Royal Albert Hall
by Debbie Gilpin - Oct 4, 2019

Almost six years since its first outing at the Tabernacle, Letters Live last night put on its biggest show yet: in the grandiose and historic setting of the Royal Albert Hall. As well as celebrating the joy and emotion of the written word, with the help of a stunning array of talent, the shows also seek to support charitable causes - this time it was the turn of the National Literacy Trust. Over the course of three hours, the audience was treated to a wide-ranging selection of correspondence, including everything from noisy neighbours and Albert Hall shenanigans, to a prolifically flatulent dog.

Alexina Unveils Her Debut EP 'Partying on my Own
by Abigail Charpentier - Sep 27, 2019

Today, Alexina releases her new EP titled 'Partying on my Own.' This alt-pop-noir release is a heart-wrenching, yet ultimately triumphant breakup story, told chronologically from a moment of doubt after locking eyes with a stranger at a house party in 'Cool Together,' to the cathartic, hopeful reflection on a  tumultuous relationship in 'The Millennial.' This deeply personal, autobiographical EP is lyrically raw and nostalgic complimented by bittersweet, warm synths and retro drum beats. Alexina speaks musically for her gender and generation- a girl growing up broke in a city where life is tough, who is scrutinized on social media, and who can't afford rent. The 'Partying on my Own' EP is an invitation to every other girl/guy who has been through these situations to feel powerful and dance along with these anthemic, sun-bleached songs.

ROALD DAHL'S WILLY WONKA Takes Stage At Wheelock Family Theatre This Fall
by Stephi Wild - Sep 26, 2019

In the wondrous world of Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, 'splendiferous' is a word, rivers are made out of chocolate, bubblegum never loses its taste, and, as the lyric goes, 'you can even eat the dishes'! On Wonka's quest to find an heir for his delectable dreamscape, he cooks up a contest for five lucky children around the world to win a golden ticket and tour his chocolate factory. But what these children do not know is that Wonka has also concocted five temptation rooms -- interpreted in WFT@BU's production as gluttony, pride, greed, envy, and anger (sound familiar?) -- to catch anyone who does not have the moral compass to lead his mouth-watering kingdom. Only one child will win a golden ticket and the factory, but it is only through genuine honesty and kindness that he or she will rise.
