New York City Ballet’s 2026 Winter Season will feature a world premieres by Justin Peck and NYCB Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, two early ballets by Balanchine and more.

In many of America’s cities, theatre history exists in plain sight. Whether inside a museum or on a street corner, fascinating pieces of theatre lore exist, waiting to be discovered by an interested passerby. Here are ten inspiring displays of theatre history I saw up close and in person this summer, from New York City to Washington D.C. and beyond. You can visit them too—and many are free to see!

The results of this season's Tony races are still up in the air, but many of this season's nominated revivals have been through awards season before. How did they fare? TDF, the not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts, has just announced that celebrated costume designer ANN HOULD-WARD and legendary scenic designer RICHARD HUDSON are among the 2024 TDF/Irene Sharaff Award recipients.

All that was missing were shouts of “food fight!” to turn last night’s performance of Richard Wagner’s TANNHAUSER—the first of the Met’s season—into a version of National Lampoon’s Night at the Opera, as climate activists interrupted the house debut of the great baritone Christian Gerhaher, and audience members traded barbs with the demonstrators, threatening the company’s determination that “the show must go on.”

Wagner’s Tannhäuser returns to the Met with soprano Elza van den Heever and tenor Andreas Schager making their Met role debuts as Elisabeth and Tannhäuser. Baritone Christian Gerhaher also makes his company debut in the role of Wolfram.

New York City Ballet’s 2023 Winter Season – January 17 through February 26 – will feature performances of 17 ballets performed by New York City Ballet’s 100 dancers and apprentices and the 62-piece New York City Ballet Orchestra.

The next broadcast of Rob Morrison's Musical Theatre Melodies will pay tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Steven Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson's Tony Award winning musical PIPPIN, featuring interviews with Tony Award winner John Rubenstein and songs from the original Broadway cast recording with special narration by Tony Award nominee Walter Willison.

ELLA: An American Miracle, a new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith (Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 and Notes From The Field) and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook, is currently in development, with an upcoming work session held from August 25-September 21 to conclude with a private industry presentation.

New York City Ballet’s 2022-23 Season at Lincoln Center will open on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 and continue with 21 weeks of performances through Sunday, May 28, 2023. View the full schedule, find out how to get tickets and more.

Taylor & Francis Group, the largest publisher in performing arts, has released the first book on the history of the theatre-costume business under its Routledge imprint. Written by a trio of practicing professionals with vast and varied experience, the book features interviews with award-winning actors, designers, and the costume makers themselves.

World Premieres by Hope Boykin and Lauren Lovette will be presented over two evenings during the ABT Studio Company Winter Festival on Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10 at 7 P.M. on American Ballet Theatre’s YouTube channel.
