Festival Theater Hudson today announced its inaugural 2021-2022 season, beginning with a Gala Inaugural Concert featuring the US premier of Israeli composer Ittai Shapira's Magyar: A Concerto for Two Violins, followed by Act l of Richard Wagner's Die Walkure.
Under Haydon's stewardship, the Rose's own work will be the priority, as demonstrated by the five Rose Originals in this upcoming season, but there will always be room on the theatre's stage for the country's leading touring shows as well. This season's Rose Originals are a blend of new plays tackling significant contemporary issues and well-known titles reinvented for today.
While the second LYRICS FOR A CAUSE didn't happen in March as planned due to COVID-19 shutdowns, talented young performers joyfully sang in a virtual cabaret held Friday night live from their own homes. The Rose Youth Theatre has great form in developing new theatrical talent. With excellent performances by members in every Christmas production at the Rose, The Creature: Frankenstein Retold is an exciting opportunity to witness the professional debut for nine alumni of the group.
Rose Theatre will present The Creature: [Frankenstein Retold] based on Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and adapted for the stage by Ciaran McConville. The production, directed by Lucy Morrell, opens on 28 February and runs until 29 February, with previews from 27 February.
Working on The Creature [Frankenstein Retold] has been the biggest challenge but also the absolute highlight of my career. Ciaran McConville' s play has a complex narrative where the audience are told a story-within-a-story in snippets, along with the characters. Our Dr Frankenstein character is a driven young scientist who is deeply affected by loss and a desire for a better world. The play is transported to a modern setting where new technologies are used, just like in Mary Shelley's original, to create a creature with monstrous and potentially catastrophic abilities.
