Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, one of the nation's premier music ensembles and a leader in presenting wide-ranging repertoire, offers three Baroque Conversations programs curated and led by LACO artists during the 2019-20 season, each with back-to-back performances on Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 pm. LACO Music Director Jaime Martín conducts Handel's spirited Water Music, as well as works by Telemann and R. Strauss on November 21 and 22, 2019; Principal Trumpet David Washburn and Principal Horn Michael Thornton co-lead an all-brass program, including works by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and Purcell on January 16 and 17, 2020; and Principal Keyboard Patricia Mabee, featured on harpsichord, leads a diverse range of work for harpsichord, theorbo and baroque guitar by a range of contemporary and Baroque-era Hispanic and Latin American composers on a program entitled a?oeBorder Crossings,a?? on March 12 and 13, 2020. On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Santa Fe Opera presented Leoš Janáček's powerful dramatic opera Jenůfa. Laura Wilde, a former Santa Fe Apprentice who performed the title role at English National Opera in 2016, again sang the lead while Patricia Racette, who has often sung Jenůfa, portrayed her stepmother, Kostelnička. Both artists gave glorious dramatic interpretations of their roles in this shattering but moving opera.
Max Vernon's new musical The View UpStairs sees its Bay Area premiere in Ed Decker's appealing production at the New Conservatory Theatre. This is a time-traveling tale that allows multiple generations of the gay community to intermingle and confront the complexities of building queer communities throughout the ages in the charming UpStairs Lounge in New Orleans, the site of one of the most violent incidents in the gay liberation movement of the 1970s.
