Dear Readers, you may recall that several years ago there was a new musical that came through town, about Princesses (even called that), that many consider, including myself, to be one of the worst things they've ever seen. But as bad as it was, it had three things going for it. First, there was a story built around a Father's love for his daughter. Second, there was a hunky boy-band type, who may have creeped many out with his utterly rapey song a?oeJust Say Yesa??, but he was still pretty. And third, and most importantly, the show featured one truly great song that spotlighted the quirkier and subordinate a?oePrincessesa?? of the bunch. Cut to 2020 and enter the 5th Avenue Theatre's latest new musical venture, a?oeBlissa?? that, while having no real connection to that other one, blissfully and coincidentally contains those three elements and runs with them, while tossing the rest of that dreadful show into the infernos of musical theater hell (along with the likes of a?oeFlashdancea?? and a?oeLove Never Diesa??). And while a?oeBlissa?? may still have some work to do to make it truly shine (which we'll get to in a minute), it's still a delightfully fun romp into the woods with some Princess archetypes who aren't the norm but should be.

He gained critical acclaim with his Tony-nominated one-man show Laugh Whore, from its appearance at the Cort Theatre on Broadway to the Showtime special. The previous theatre season saw Cantone starring in the Tony-winning Assassins by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman. Both hit shows were directed by four-time Tony-winner Joe Mantello. An accomplished stage actor, Cantone has appeared on Broadway in the role of a?oeBuzza?? in Terrence McNally's award-winning dramatic comedy, Love! Valor! Compassion! and a?oeStephanoa?? in Shakespeare's The Tempest at the Public Theater. Mario Cantone starred in the 2007 release of Sony's animated film, Surf's Up, and appeared in the hilarious film The Aristocrats. On television, Cantone can currently be seen as a?oeAnthony,a?? Charlotte's wedding-planner-with-attitude, now that HBO's Sex and the City is in syndication on TBS, E! and many other stations, as well as the Sex and the City movie franchise.
The Muny announced today the directors, choreographers and music directors for its 2020 season, which opens June 15 with Kander and Ebb's internationally-acclaimed Chicago. Among the talented list are a mix of Muny favorites and newcomers. In addition to casting, a comprehensive list of design teams for each production will be released later this spring. Tuesday night at The Green Room 42 in New York City, Michael Longoria's Holiday Hop brought Christmas cheer to benefit Opening Act. The one night only concert was produced by Michael Longoria, Liz Skollar of Skollar PR and Taylor James of 42West PR as a benefit for the students of Opening Act, an organization that seeks to level the playing field for students by specifically partnering with NYC schools that have lower than average graduation rates (as few as 33% of students graduating in four years) and an evident lack of theater programming.

Michael Longoria brings Holiday Hop to the Green Room 42! He is singing to raise money and awareness to a wonderful organization bringing free theater programming to high school students in New York City called Opening Act. It was formed by a group of actors and educators 20 years ago with goals of offering free after school theater programming to public schools in New York City.
