BWW Review: THE WEDDING SINGER at DESERT STAGES THEATRE Parties Like It's 1986 BWW Review: THE WEDDING SINGER at DESERT STAGES THEATRE Parties Like It's 1986
by Nathaniel Jones - Jul 21, 2019

When you think of a group of young performers doing a musical, most people enter with the assumption of low quality and newbie type talent. This largely stems from the mindset of not believing young folks can put in the same hard work as any other seasoned professional. Desert Stages production of The Wedding Singer is a prime example of why we should hold our young actors to higher expectations and treat them like the professionals they strive to be. (more...)

BWW Review: DADA WOOF PAPA HOT at About Face Theatre BWW Review: DADA WOOF PAPA HOT at About Face Theatre
by Rachel Weinberg - Jan 20, 2019

In DADA WOOF PAPA HOT, now in its Chicago premiere at About Face Theatre, playwright Peter Parnell explores that nagging question of what it means to have it all. The play centers on a gay couple and their circle of friends. Though Alan (Bruch Reed) and Rob (Benjamin Sprunger) have been together for fifteen years, they've been married for a much shorter period of time and must navigate their shifting identities as partners and as parents of their three-year-old daughter, Nicola. (The play's seemingly nonsensical title refers to her first words and attempt at her parents' names.) The characters in DADA WOOF PAPA HOT are clearly well-off, but that doesn't make the ways in which they struggle with the challenges of daily life and parenthood any less human. (more...)

BWW Review: THE WEDDING SINGER at Theatre Three
by Kyle Christopher West - Sep 28, 2016

No matter what year you were born, you've probably teased your hair and belted out every word to 'Livin' On A Prayer,' or 'Don't Stop Believing' at some point in your life. The 1980's are celebrated as a never-ending pop music party that everyone seems to remember fondly - including the younger generation who wasn't even around for it! When Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore fell in love onscreen in the 80's-themed 1998 film THE WEDDING SINGER, a comedic classic was born, eventually becoming inspiration to a Broadway musical of the same name in 2006. Although the stage version never quite captured audiences or critics like the movie did (perhaps they were 'Too Shy' to pay $111.25 for the blast-from-the-past?), the show was overall well received by audiences. Now, Dallas' theatre-in-the-round, Theatre Three, brings the 'Me decade' to the stage in THE WEDDING SINGER and providing a lot of upbeat, fluffy fun. (more...)
