& Juliet offers a contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, asking what might happen if Juliet chose a different path after Romeo’s death. Written by comedy genius David West Read (Schitt’s Creek), the musical blends Shakespearean characters with modern tastes and twists, exploring themes of self-discovery, independence, and second chances.

Broadway Across Canada has announced that tickets for & Juliet will go on sale this week for eight performances this fall in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Written by Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek writer David West Read, the musical flips the script on Romeo and Juliet by allowing Juliet to continue her story after Romeo’s death.

Because of Winn-Dixie, the new Broadway-bound musical based on the Newbery Medal-winning and best-selling children’s novel by Kate DiCamillo, will hold a private reading in New York City.

The regional premiere of the jukebox musical, & Juliet loudly strutted into the Herhsey Theatre on April 14th,  The story is an altenrate take on what might happen to Juliet if she decided not to kill herself along with Romeo.  Fabiola Caraballo Qulada is fierce as the title character both in attitude and vocals.  Other stad-out performances include Crystal Kellogg as Anne. and Nico Ochoa as May.

The North American Tour of & Juliet, starring *NSYNC's Joey Fatone as 'Lance,' will play an exclusive limited engagement in Chicago this summer. Tickets to the tour stop are on sale now.

What did our critic think of & JULIET at National Arts Centre?

&Juliet is a 2019 jukebox musical, featuring a book by David West Read and music by Max Martin, a Swedish Pop songwriter. On the surface, its story is fairly simple when laid out, but the adventures of its characters and how they traverse the narrative is whatreally get to the heart of the story.

Created by the Emmy®-winning writer from Schitt’s Creek, &Juliet at the Straz was a witty burst of female power, driven by knockout vocals. Anne’s challenge to Shakespeare to imagine a stronger woman set the whole story in motion. Though even with strong performances from the men, this show belonged to the women, and that felt exactly right for this moment.

If “& Juliet” works at all, it’s because it commits to the premise without apology: a Shakespearean remix told through the lens of pop music, meta-theatre, and a general belief that stories never really die, they just get re-written. This touring production of the still-running Broadway musical leaned into this ethos with a cast that understood the assignment – treating the material with enough sincerity to make it land, but enough wryness to make it feel like commentary.

'For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.' It's a classic tale, one that has been told hundreds of thousands of times and one that theatre kids everywhere know well. But you likely have not seen Romeo and Juliet quite like this. The costumes are vibrant, the choreography is exhilirating, the voices are powerful, and the story... there is quite the twist in the story. 

The national tour of “& Juliet” opened Tuesday night for a run through Sunday at the Kansas City Music Hall with enough voltage to transform the theater into a full-color pop arena.  “& Juliet” is a clever take and reimaging of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”  It is funny.  It is hip! It is hugely enjoyed by the audience!
