MASI ASARE is a composer, lyricist, and playwright. Shows include: THE FAMILY RESEMBLANCE (book/music/lyrics; Theatre Royal Stratford East commission, Eugene O’Neill Center); a new musical about a story of racial passing (book/music/lyrics) commissioned by Barbara Whitman/Grove Entertainment; the new musical adaptation of Mira Nair’s film MONSOON WEDDING (lyrics); a one-act play about Ms. Marvel MIRROR OF MOST VALUE (Marvel/Samuel French); a new musical commissioned by Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre/Toulmin Foundation; and spy musical SYMPATHY JONES (music/lyrics/concept; NYMF; Playscripts). A past Dramatists Guild Fellow, Masi won the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for a woman composer of musicals, both the Holof Lyricist Award and the Haupt Composition Prize from the O’Neill Center, an Emerging Artist Grant from the Theater Hall of Fame, and the Stacey Mindich “Go Write A Musical” Lilly Award. An advisory board member for MAESTRA, she holds degrees from Harvard and NYU Tisch and is on the Theatre department faculty at Northwestern University.

St. Ann's Warehouse Extends MONSOON WEDDING for Three Weeks

St. Ann's Warehouse, responding to extraordinary demand for tickets, has announced a three-week extension of Monsoon Wedding, the Musical, Mira Nair's live theatrical adaptation of her landmark film. The new production, featuring actors and theater-makers from India and the global Indian diaspora, welcomes audiences inside the lavish wedding plans and frenzied leadup to an arranged marriage beset by modern tensions. Preview performances begin at the Brooklyn waterfront theater on May 6.

The 2nd Annual Antonyo Awards Will Be Presented in October

 Broadway Black presents The 2nd Annual Antonyo Awards, which honors Black theatre artists during the 2021-2022 season. The live, in-person ceremony will be held on Monday, October 10 at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem (253 West 125th Street). Drawing inspiration from concerts that evolved from Brooklyn front porches to its own rooftop balcony and large-scale exhibitions mounted on its exterior facade, St. Ann’s Warehouse will return, merging public art, theater, and activism at a whole new level.

PARADISE SQUARE Will Play Final Broadway Performance

Barring a dramatic upturn in business, the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Paradise Square will conclude its run with the 3:00 pm matinee on Sunday, July 17 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street). At the time of closing, the production will have played 23 previews and 108 performances. 


Masi Asare has been nominated for several awards for her work on the musical "Paradise Square." She was nominated for Outstanding Score at the Outer Critics Circle Awards and for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre at the Tony Awards. She received two nominations in the Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre category at the Tony Awards for her contributions to "Paradise Square."
