Maija Garcia Biography
Maija Garcia is a Cuban-American director and choreographer based in Harlem. In 2015 Garcia served as director of movement and choreography on Spike Lee’s latest film Chi-Raq. In the same year she directed Salsa, Mambo Cha Cha Cha in Havana; premiered FELA! The Concert in Australia and New Zealand; and choreographed the new hit musical CUBA LIBRE at Artists Repertory Theater. Garcia's work is described as ‘enormous, emotive, and furiously political.’ -Portland MercuryAssociate Choreographer to Bill T. Jones in developing the Tony award winning musical FELA! on Broadway and at the National Theater of London, Garcia became Creative Director of FELA! World Tours in the US, Europe and Africa.
Stage credits include director/choreographer, The Legend of Yauna featuring Zap Mama at BAM; choreographer, Fats Waller Dance Party with Jason Moran and Meshell N’degeocello at Harlem Stage, Kennedy Center and Chicago Jazz Festival; curator, Spring Bash installation for New York Live Arts; and assistant director/musical staging, Neighbors by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins at the Public Theater. Film credits include Angelique Kidjo PBS special; Seun Kuti music video RISE; FELA! TV Commercial; and features on Colbert Report, The View, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Garcia's signature storytelling integrates live music, interactive design and historical narrative with visceral movement. She founded Organic Magnetics www.organicmagnetics.com to produce live, interactive installations by sustainable design. Garcia co-wrote and directed I Am New York: Juan Rodriguez at El Museo del Barrio; and directed Ghosts of Manhattan: 1512-2012, an interactive history at Fort Tryon Park.
A member of SDC, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, Garcia is represented by Olivier Sultan at CAA, Creative Artists Agency.

Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation (SDCF), the independent, not-for-profit affiliate of SDC, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, today announced unique plans for its 2019 award evening, which will feature original choreographic pieces resulting from a special commissioning program, with the application period now open. SDCF also announced that Victoria Traube would receive a special 'Mr. Abbott' Award at the event, to be held March 25 at the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF).
