Alicia Silverstone is an American actress, author, and animal rights activist. She was born on October 4, 1976, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Hillsborough, a wealthy suburb of San Francisco. Silverstone began her acting career at the age of 16, appearing in a number of television commercials before landing her first major role in the 1993 film "The Crush."
Silverstone's breakout role came in 1995 when she starred as Cher Horowitz in the hit film "Clueless." The film, which was loosely based on Jane Austen's novel "Emma," was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $56 million at the box office. Silverstone's performance as the fashionable and popular Cher earned her a number of award nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.
In addition to her film work, Silverstone has also appeared on stage. In 2002, she made her Broadway debut in a revival of "The Graduate," playing the role of Elaine Robinson.
