Barter Theatre is now accepting enrollments for upcoming, fall workshops and classes that begin the week of September 13 through the end of October. Classes taught by Barter professionals will be offered varying from writing a first play, to beginning acting, to training those seriously dedicated to their craft.

Classes will be taught by David Alford, Evalyn Baron, Katie Becker, Thomas Bryant and Kate Denson and will be held in Abingdon at Barter's Education Building at 160 Cummings Street.

Barter Theatre Fall Classes

7th Grade - Adult
BEGINNING PLAYWRITING: How to Write a Good First Play!
Mondays: Sept. 13 - Oct. 25, 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
For all interested in teaching about or competing in the 2010 Young Playwrights Festival* at Barter Theatre and for all others who are fascinated by the prospect of writing an original script - for TV, film or live theatre. Join acclaimed playwright and teacher Tommy Bryant as he leads you through the creative process from imagination to page.
Cost: $75
*Teachers who have never participated in Barter's Young Playwrights Festival must register for a free teachers workshop on September 8. Call Tere Land at 276.619.3347. The Young Playwrights Festival will be held on November 8.

FALL INTO ACTING: The Adult Class
Mondays: Sept. 20 - Nov. 1, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Gather with teacher Evalyn Baron to explore techniques, plays, scenes and monologues from theatre classics. This very popular class has grown into a Barter staple, with community actors joining in the fun more and more with each session! No experience necessary.
Cost: $200

6th-8th Grade
VOCAL PERFORMANCE: Bringing a Song to Life on Stage
Tuesdays: Sept. 14 - Oct. 26, 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Explore in depth the skills needed to maintain characterization while singing to create an internal dialogue and eliminate "air" to fill your vocal performance with energy and life. Taught by David Alford, these concepts are great for vocal performances and auditions. Limited class size. Materials provided. Be ready to perform for class. Some vocal/performing experience will be helpful.
Cost: $125

8th-12th Grade
ACTORS' WORKSHOP: Using Voice and Body to Tell a Powerful Story!
Tuesdays: Sept. 14 - Oct. 26, 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.
This fast-paced workshop will delve into performing on two frontiers: seeking command of the voice and using the body to convey a story. First, students will explore their own voices to expand the range of their vocal delivery to infuse lines with richness and complexity. Then, students will gain new skills to enhance their physical movement onstage to convey a story. Once these enhanced skills are combined, students will experience a new depth and flexibility in their performing. This workshop will use texts from classical literature for the final presentation for parents and friends at the last meeting. Possible 2011 performance opportunities may present themselves. David Alford and Katie Becker - two of Barter's most powerful and popular teachers - are joining forces to teach this special workshop, and the class size will be limited, so please call soon to enroll. 3rd-5th Grade
Theatrical Storytelling: What Story Is Within YOU?
Thursdays: Sept. 16 - Oct. 28, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Katie Becker will guide young actors (of all experience levels) through different techniques for writing and telling an original story. Students will develop physical movement and vocal communication skills as well as improvisation, creative writing and group communication experience. The class will culminate in a series of scenes created and performed by the students. To accomplish in-depth individual work, class limit is 12.

Ages: K-1st Grade
A MAGICAL ADVENTURE INTO THEATRE!
Saturdays: Sept. 18 - Oct. 30, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Acclaimed teacher Kate Denson will lead kids through fun theatre games like "Tell Me About the Time" and "The Magic Pillowcase." These games are designed to help students learn to be comfortable in front of an audience. Through improvisation students will learn how to tell a story by creating and performing scenes. Mask making will also be used to engage students' imaginations. A performance will be given at the end of the class.
Cost: $90

2nd - 3rd Grade
AN EXPLOSION OF IMPROV: Create and Have Fun!
Saturdays: Sept. 18 - Oct. 30, 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Throughout this class young actors will run the gamut of improvisation with games like "Freeze and Justify," "Galactic Kitchen," and "Create Your Own Scenes and Monologues." Teacher Kate Denson will enable imaginations to soar and be put to use creating new performing art! Parents are invited to experience students' unique creations at a special performance.
