About the Show:

This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just “an angry inch.” This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (formerly Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band “The Angry Inch.”

Roles:

Hedwig – A low-rent Rock Star in every sense of the word. The story focuses on Hedwig’s transformation, and will require the performer to be adept with singing, dancing (at least suggestive and entertaining movement) comedy, drama, storytelling, character voices, slight German accent, and revealing costumes (possible shirtless, but no nudity.) Majority of the story is told by Hedwig via monologue, as her story is being recounted, this includes her playing her German Mother, American Husband Luther, American teenage lover, Tommy and others.

Yitzhak- Former Drag Queen, sidelined by Hedwig. Trapped in a loveless relationship, full of spite, obligation, bitterness and jealousy. Relegated to “back up singer” Yitzhak is abused and mistreated most of the show. There is some redemption, and comedic opportunities, and solo singing, you are very much outshined by the abusive Hedwig.
