ABOUT THE PLAY:
Set in rural Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, a riveting Drama Desk and Tony Award winning play is a brilliant black comedy by award winning Irish playwright Martin McDonagh about the intensely toxic, codependent relationship between a lonely spinster, Maureen Folan, and her manipulative, aging mother, Mag, in their isolated cottage.
Loaded with savage irony and surreal humor, the play escalates into a violent, suspenseful thriller when Maureen's only chance at romance, with Pato Dooley, is sabotaged by Mag, leading to a gruesome conclusion as Maureen fights for freedom from her suffocating life. Known for its rich, violent language and shifting power dynamics, it's a story of dreams, discontent, and bitter familial warfare.
McDonagh's cycle of dependence and fear will not only leave audiences laughing, but also gasping in horror at the sinister undercurrent that he has so brilliantly weaved into his writing.
