Jay Harris Wins George Abbott Award; Ceremony Set for April 2

The George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts will be presented to commercial theater producer Jay H. Harris, a member of The League of American Theaters and Producers who served on the Board of Directors of the Carbonell Awards from 2001-2008, including two terms as president, during which time he was instrumental in rising the profile of the awards and designing its current voting structure.
36th Annual Carbonell Awards Set for 4/2

The South Florida community is invited to celebrate the achievements of the talented theater professionals in the region at the 36th Annual Carbonell Awards on Monday, April 2, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater, at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 S.W. 5th Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets in advance are $25 with $20 tickets available for groups of 10 or more, $35 at the door. Tickets are available at the Broward Center's box office or by emailing carbexec@aol.com or visiting www.browardcenter.org. This award ceremony will feature performances from each of the productions nominated for Best Musical in 2011.

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. have enjoyed tremendous success over the last four decades as recording artists, performers and authors. They have received seven Grammy Awards and earned 15 gold and three platinum records, and enjoyed starring roles on television and stage. Both as a duo and as lead vocalists of The 5th Dimension, one of the most popular singing groups in the late 60s and early 70s, they have performed to sold-out concerts around the world. Among their top hits are Up, Up & Away, Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In, Wedding Bell Blues, One Less Bell to Answer, Stones Soul Picnic and You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show). This will be the second Royal Room engagement for Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., following their Colony Hotel debut in Spring 2009.

West Palm Beach's only resident professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, will launch its 13th Anniversary Season with Lanford Wilson's Pulitzer Prize winning play "Talley's Folly" on Friday, October 12th (8PM) at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre (201 Clematis Street). The season will continue with a distinguished roster of plays including "A Delicate Balance" by Edward Albee, "A Raisin in the Sun"by Lorraine Hansberry, "Exit the King" by Eugene Ionesco and "Dancing at Lughnasa" by Brian Friel.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Streetcar Named Desire follows the story of Blanche DuBois, a weak and disturbed woman on a desperate prowl for some place in the world to call her own. After losing their ancestral home, Belle Reve, Blanche shows up at the doorstep of her sister, Stella, in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Putting on airs of refinement and Southern gentility, Blanche tries to impress her brother-in-law, and his gentle, good-natured friend, Mitch. Seeking to escape from reality, and an emblem of a lost traditional South, Blanche becomes a victim of the harsh present. Marlon Brando starred in the Broadway production and the 4-time Academy Award-winning film adaptation. This will mark the 65th Anniversary of this enduring Tennessee Williams classic.

Hally has known Willie and Sam all his life, and is very fond of them both; however, on one rainy day in 1950 their wide-ranging discussions illustrate all that unites us and the gulf that still divides us. Considered to be one of Fugard's greatest pieces, '"Master Harold"…and the boys" tells the universal story of human relationships that are put to the test by societal and personal forces.

On Tuesday, March 20, Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club, a premier golf club in Boca Raton, Florida, welcomed back recent recipient of the Fred Ebb Award and Tony Award Nominee, Jeff Blumenkrantz and his fellow Broadway actor, Laura Patinkin. The two performers showcased their talents for a crowd of more than 200 Boca Grove members and guests. Mary Becht to be Honored with Howard Kleinberg Award

The 2012 Howard Kleinberg Award recipient has been announced by the Carbonells. Established in 2000, the award is named after Howard Kleinberg, long-time Editor of The Miami News, historian, and author of numerous articles and books on the social and cultural history of Miami and South Florida. It is awarded as special recognition for contributions to the health and development of the arts in South Florida. This year's honor will go to Mary A. Becht.
