'The Breakfast Club' Musical-Workshop Performances in Miami

By:

Students from the University of Miami collaborate to
create and produce an original musical, The Breakfast Club Project:
A new musical
– an adaptation of John Hughes's 1984 film, The
Breakfast Club.  Though still in a workshop stage, audiences will
have the opportunity to view the project at the University of Miami
Hecht Studio Theatre, 1228 Dickinson Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146.
The studio theatre is on the 2nd floor of Hecht Residential College,
in the Theatre Department, room 204, on Friday, April 7th at 8pm,
Saturday, April 8th at 2pm, and Sunday, April 9th at 7pm.

The University of Miami will once again be leading the university
community in offering unique and groundbreaking opportunities for
its students. During the fall 2005 semester, a producing class,
consisting of fifteen students from a variety of different majors,
came together to bring an original musical to the stage. This is a
first among university campuses and with guidance of visiting
professor/Broadway producer and Tony award winner Barry Brown, the
students have participated in every angle of the producing process.

This process began by choosing and agreeing upon a piece to produce
that all the students were passionate about bringing to the stage.
Once the piece was chosen, they recruited a composer, lyrists, and
book writers from the class to transform the film. With the writing
team in place the class then divided the other positions among
themselves, which included: directors, casting director, musical
director, stage manager, stage & light designer, costume designer,
budget, press & publicity, box office, and various assistants.

Each student having their position in the project solidified, class
time is used for production meetings. Departments report what they
have accomplished and pose questions to Brown and other students
when problems arise. Brown maintains the belief that this is a class
project and that the students should be given the freedom to create
their own piece. He does, however, provide insight into the business
of producing, whether through ethics, policy, procedure, etc.
Brown's experience includes 2 Tony awards for producing the original
production of La Cage aux Folles and Gypsy with Tyne Daly as well as
numerous AIDS benefits and productions in London.

Brown's experience paired with the students' passion will culminate
in the workshop viewing in April, though the students hope that
interest in the project does not end there. Admission is free of
charge, but seating is limited, so those who are interested in
tickets or have any questions should
