Carousel is set in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century. Billy loses his job and, concerned with providing for Julie and his unborn child, is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Getting caught and fearing his future, he takes his own life. Billy is allowed to return to Earth for one day fifteen years later and meets the daughter he never knew. Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity, demonstrating the power of love.
