Award-winning director Bart DeLorenzo returns to the Odyssey to direct an exuberant and burlesque-spirited version of Anton Chekhov's Ivanov, the story of a once idealistic man turned apathetic from a life going terribly, terribly wrong. DeLorenzo plans a fresh approach to this little-known classic -- no birch trees, samovars, or wicker furniture – in a riotous production that promises to be ridiculous, soulful, and sexy. An Odyssey Theatre and Evidence Room co-production.

Anton Chekhov [1860 – 1904] (Playwright) was a Russian physician, dramatist, and author. His career as a dramatist produced four classics: The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. His short stories were held in high esteem. In 1887, he was commissioned to write his first full length play, Ivanov. Though Chekhov found the experience unsatisfying, the play was a hit. He revised it to its current condition in 1889. He practiced as a doctor through most of his literary career: "Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress." He succumbed to tuberculosis in 1904.

Paul Schmidt [1930 – 2009] (Translation) was an American translator, poet, playwright and essayist. He translated Euripides, Chekhov, Brecht, etc. and wrote three plays. He won the Helen Hayes Award and Kesselring Award for best play for Black Sea Follies. He taught at the Yale School of Drama and his work appeared in The New Yorker Review of Books.

Bart DeLorenzo (Director) is the artistic director of the Evidence Room Theater where he has directed or produced over 50 plays during the last 16 years. He is pleased to return to the Odyssey where he recently directed Day Drinkers, Margo Veil and The Receptionist (Evidence Room co-productions) as well as A Number. Recent directing includes: Legacy of Light and Around the World in 80 Days at the Cleveland Playhouse, King Lear with the Antaeus Company, the world premieres of Doctor Cerberus and Shipwrecked! An Entertainment at South Coast Rep, Bobrauschenbergamerica with TheSpyAnts, Voice Lessons at the Zephyr and Sacred Fools, The Projectionist at the Kirk Douglas, and Joan Rivers: A Work in Progress at the Geffen Playhouse. He has received five LA Weekly Awards, three Backstage Garlands, and two LA Drama Critics Circle Awards including his direction of last years award-winning Margo Veil.
