What is Bloomsday? It is an annual, world-wide event celebrating the life and work of Irish author James Joyce and his epic novel Ulysses, which tells the stories of the various inhabitants of Dublin occurring on June 16, 1904, inspired by Joyce's first date with lifelong companion and wife Nora Barnacle. Bloomsday is celebrated in Dublin and throughout the world with readings of Ulysses and re-creations of events in the novel. This year, members of Long Island's theatre community will be reading excerpts from Joyce's novel live on Facebook. Ordinarily, readings would be performed in a theatre, but in the current climate, we decided a virtual presentation was the next best thing, as the readings will mostly mirror the time of events in the novel. Join us throughout the day for readings of the greatest novel of 20th century Western literature.
