Unicorn Theatre Announces 2019-2020 Season

Unicorn Theatre, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Cynthia Levin, announces the 46th season of thought provoking new plays that will delve into today's most pressing social issues and reflect on our history through a modern lens. This season will include a new musical, a world premiere and two new comedies. The new season will open September 4th, 2019.
Spinning Tree Announces Cast For BILLY ELLIOT

Spinning Tree Theatre concludes season eight April 4-20 with Billy Elliot. With book and lyrics by Lee Hall and music by Elton John, Billy Elliot won ten 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. Billy Elliot will also mark the company's final production at Just Off Broadway Theatre before moving to Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center for the 2019-20 season.
Kansas City Symphony Names Daniel E. Beckley as Next Executive Director

Kansas City Symphony Board Chair William M. Lyons announced today the Symphony Board has selected Daniel E. Beckley as the next Executive Director of the Kansas City Symphony to succeed Frank Byrne, who will complete his nearly 19-year tenure this year. Beckley will assume the role of Executive Director on July 29.

Park ICM Student Competes In Prestigious Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition

Roger Kugler, Director of the Park International Center for Music, confirmed today that Park ICM violin master's candidate Laurel Gagnon was among the competitors announced Wednesday by the jurors of the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition. The 82-year-old competition is held every four years in Brussels and begins on April 29th, 2019. "Laurel's invitation to participate in this year's Queen Elisabeth competition is a testament to her exceptional talent, work ethic and extraordinary dedication to her art," said Dr. Kugler. "She is one of only nine competitors from the United States. Thus we are very excited and pleased that the International Center for Music at Park University has a student representing the University and the Kansas City metro in the most prestigious violin competition in the world."

Gunderson has topped the American Theatre Magazine list of most produced playwrights for the past several years. The production will feature an all-female cast and will be helmed by kickass director Missy Koonce. The play will feature all-star local actors Vanessa Severo, Chioma Anyanwu, Amy Attaway, & Elise Poehling.

Community Theater is alive and well in Johnson County Kansas for all Kansas City metropolitan audiences and actors.  I find myself annually amazed at the number of people who show up and audition to participate in the Shawnee Mission Park TTIP outdoor shows and the quality of the performances offered at the 4500 capacity outdoor amphitheater.   For 2019, five-hundred-sixty-one hopefuls attended the tryouts either in person or by video conference.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre artistic staff announced today that they will extend the run of Kate Hamill's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the multiple award-winning production, directed by KCRep's recently-departed Associate Artistic Director, Marissa Wolf.  Based on the novel by Jane Austen, Hamill's hilarious, gender-bending reimagining of arguably Austen's most beloved book, begins previews on March 22 and extends its run through April 20 at Spencer Theatre on the UMKC campus.
