TEAM Educational Theatre Company in association with the Road Safety Authority are taking a new theatre production for secondary school students on tour around the country. From 15th to 26th November 2010, Doughnuts will visit schools in counties Kerry, Kildare, Wicklow, Donegal, Mayo and Clare, followed by the official showcase at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin on November 27th. The production will be rolled out nationwide next year, with a seven week national tour planned for February 2011.

Doughnuts by Eoin Byrne in collaboration with TEAM, looks at the devastating consequences of reckless driving for a group of teenagers in a small town in Ireland. The programme, which is aimed at 4th, 5th and 6th year students, consists of a play, educational resource material and a post show workshop. The programme aims to raise awareness of road safety issues among young adults, present the importance of having a socially responsible attitude towards road safety, understand the risks associated with dangerous driving and help young people to make better choices and take responsibility for their actions.

Noel Brett, Chief Executive of the RSA said: "We are delighted to work with TEAM on this exciting theatre programme for students which will demonstrate to young people the devastating consequences of dangerous driving. The reality is that young adults are at a significantly higher risk of collisions on our roads and Doughnuts will show students how a wrong decision can change lives forever. This programme aims to raise students' awareness of road safety issues, present the importance of having a responsible attitude towards road safety and develop students' self-awareness regarding youth, risk and road safety."

John Breen Artistic Director of TEAM said: "Road safety is a particularly relevant issue for young people in Ireland and this play explores the theme of road safety through drama, making it interesting, memorable and relevant to young people. It takes the audience on a night out in Ireland with a group of young adults - a night that no-one in their small town will ever forget. Students will enter the main characters' world by walking into a large dome which will be set up in each school. This allows us to be more creative with dance, lighting, sound and digital production, and creates a more immersive theatrical experience for the audience. Students will be able to identify with the characters and hopefully will leave with a better understanding of their own vulnerability on the road and the potential tragic consequences of taking risks. "

TEAM Educational Theatre Company, funded by The Arts Council, have been working with schools around the country for over 35 years.
