Kabuki Intensive Wraps Up At UHM

Last night a three-week intensive training in Kabuki performance was completed at University of Hawai'i at M noa. The intensive was an early training opportunity for students interested in auditioning for the 2020/2021 season's UHM Kennedy Theatre kabuki production of Benten the Maiden and the Bandits of the White Waves (Benten Musume Meo no Shiranami) produced by the UHM Department of Theatre and Dance - Asian Theatre Program.

The Hawaii Shakespeare Festival's (HSF) eighteenth season kicks off with Shakespeare's final masterpiece, The Tempest, opening July 12. Next up is Much Ado About Nothing, opening August 1. The season concludes with Shakespeare's dark tragedy, Macbeth, opening August 9.

Since the summer of 2005, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival (HPAF) has continued to bring world-class music to Hawaii Island. Over the past fifteen years, HPAF has garnered an international reputation as a premiere training and performance program for aspiring young artists worldwide, many of whom have gone onto significant careers as singers, conductors, directors, orchestral musicians, and teachers. Each season, HPAF assembles an exceptional roster of faculty artists who provide instruction and appear in a series of events for the Big Island community. From June 24 through July 21, HPAF will present nearly 20 public performances at a number of notable island venues from Kona to Hilo, featuring both student and faculty artists.

The ARTS at Marks Garage and the Open Home Performance Network present the Hawai?i state premiere of Indecent, the acclaimed 2017 Tony nominee for Best Play. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel and directed by Lurana Donnels O'Malley, Indecent tells the true story of the play which featured the first same-sex kiss on Broadway in 1923, leading to the arrest of its entire Yiddish theatre troupe for obscenity.

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance and Kennedy Theatre are proud to present The Country Wife by William Wycherley. Directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre, Stacy Ray, this comedy of manners written in 17th century England is known for its outrageous characters, bawdiness, and satirical, sometimes farcical, view of sexuality and marriage. This quick, fun, and shameless production runs April 24, 25, 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m., and April 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre; a free post-show rap will follow the April 26 performance. Tickets are $8-$18.

Influenced by postmodern dance and Tanztheater, Integral Bodies is directed by our new Assistant Professor of Dance, Peiling Kao, in collaboration with DanceAbility artistic director Alito Alessi, a Guggenheim and the American National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship recipient. With dramaturgy by Professor of Theatre, Dr. Markus Wessendorf, this work of contemporary dance-theatre presents well-crafted physicality and choreography that embraces all kinds of bodies in performance. Movement is used to build equal opportunity for people from different cultures, races, ethnicities, genders, and physical abilities to perform together.

CMH Debuts The Hawaiian Oboe Legacy Project This May!

In its Season Finale, Chamber Music Hawaii (CMH) presents the debut of the Hawaiian Oboe Legacy Project (HOLP) featuring J. Scott Janusch, Principal Oboist of the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) and a member of the Spring Wind Quintet. Created to honor Hawaii, the instrument is the world's only handcrafted oboe made of Hawaiian kauila wood. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6 in Paliku Theatre and Monday, May 20 in Doris Duke Theatre. General Admission tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased at ChamberMusicHawaii.org. Free student tickets are also available at the door with a valid ID.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth's 64th Season culminates in a new musical rendition of the classic children's story about a puppet that longs to be a "real" boy.  The playful new musical features an original score, dancing marionettes, crafty animals and a nose that stretches over a yard when Pinocchio tells a fib. Woven throughout is the theme of sincere love between a parent and child and the importance of telling the truth.  The show is appropriate for children aged 5 and up.
