A new musical comedy to die for. On Halloween weekend, a recently-single solo getaway writer travels to a guest house to write the article that could change her life. When she finds her guest house has an unexpected roommate—a devastatingly sexy ghost who lives to torment short-term renters—sparks fly, hearts break (again), and things get delightfully weird. Written by rising-star writers Brett Ryback and Jeff Luppino-Esposito, Love Is Dead is wildly irreverent, screamingly funny, and bursting with spirited, pop-infused songs. Don’t miss this brand-new musical making its world premiere right here at Village—because sometimes the only way to feel alive again is to fall for someone who isn’t.
Age 20s–30s. Female. A smart, anxious, funny copywriter recovering from a breakup and desperate to reinvent herself as a serious essayist. Neurotic, ambitious, emotionally exposed, and deeply relatable. Carries the show. Strong comedic timing, emotional vulnerability, and significant vocal stamina. Vocal range: Mezzo / strong contemporary belt.
Cody: Age 20s–30s. Male. A charming, mischievous ghost stuck in the house where he died in 1994. Starts playful and antagonistic, gradually revealing emotional depth, regret, and romantic sincerity. Balances comedy, menace, and genuine heart. Strong singer with ease and charisma. Vocal range: Tenor / pop-rock sensibility.
Ted: Jordan’s ex. Confident, emotionally oblivious, casually cruel.
UPS Guy: Brief comic appearance.
A high-energy character track requiring rapid shifts in voice, physicality, and point of view. Must handle broad comedy, grounded humanity, and heightened theatricality. Age 30s–60s. Any gender.
Roles include:
Blake: Jordan’s best friend; witty, supportive, goth-leaning humor.
Father Mike: Genial, evasive priest/landlord.
Steve: Chipper, clueless barista.
Deb: Blunt, comic mortuary cosmetologist (Long Island flavor).
Zeke: Intense, unsettling antique dealer / hunter type.
Emily Winters: Celebrated literary icon; confident, intimidating presence.
