RED is coming to Cleveland Play House. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, Red is written by John Logan (Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of Hugo, Gladiator, The Aviator and Sweeney Todd). Director Anders Cato returns to CPH after acclaimed productions of Crime of Punishment and I Am My Own Wife to lead a cast of two exceptional actors, Bob Ari and Randy Harrison.

In 1939, Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Mammy in GONE WITH THE WIND. She was also the first African American to be an invited guest to attend the Oscars. Ironically, she was required to sit alone at the back of the Cocoanut Grove, the site of the award ceremonies, a far distance from the white performers in the movie.

Frankie Avalon, Fabian & Bobby Rydell, "The Golden Boys" from American Bandstand's heyday, have appeared together on such major TV specials as "The American Music Awards," the closing ceremonies of the "Miss Liberty Special" (viewed by over 200 million people) and the ABC Inaugural special "Command Performance: An All-Star Salute To The President."

Friedman is a Sondheimophile. He knows the master's works well. Why would he even adventure into Whistle land, which is fraught with land mines?

Due to its language and subject matter, it's not a play for everyone, but those interested in having an up-front emotionally involving theatrical theatre experience, should definitely see this production.
