By: Apr. 17, 2012

Playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, who will be coming to Cleveland Play House for a week-long residency as part of New Ground Theatre Festival, has just been awarded the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Water By the Spoonful. The Pulitzer is given "for a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life," and includes a prize of $10,000.

Hudes will be at Cleveland Play House for a week-long residency May 1 – 5, 1012, as the winner of the first annual Roe Green Award, which brings a leading American playwright to Cleveland to develop a new project culminating in a public reading as part of New Ground Theatre Festival. Hudes will also teach a Master Class with CPH Playwrights' Unit, Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University theatre students. The reading of Hudes new play, tentatively titled Daphne's Dive, is open to the public and takes place on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. Tickets are pay-what-you-can and can be purchased in advance by phone at 216-241-6000 or online at www.clevelandplayhouse.com.

"We are thrilled to be hosting this year's Pulitzer Prize winning playwright as part of the New Ground Theatre Festival," said Michael Bloom, CPH Artistic Director. "Water by the Spoonful is a wonderful play that we hope to program in the future."
