Called "a gripping and brilliant production" by The New York Times, Carmen stars El?na Garan?aas the seductive gypsy, opposite Roberto Alagna as the obsessed soldier Don José. Acclaimed rising Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the Met's production by Olivier Award-winning British director Richard Eyre, which features Barbara Frittoli as Micaëla and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the toreador Escamillo. Christopher Wheeldon, artistic director and founder of Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, created the choreography for what remains the Met's best-selling transmission to date. Soprano Renée Fleming hosts the transmission and conducts backstage interviews with the stars. Original transmission: Saturday, January 16, 2010. (Running time: approximately 3 hours)
PRESS QUOTES:
"The Met's new Carmen is a gripping and brilliant production [which] provides an ideal context for Ms. Garan?a's nuanced, sexy and cagey portrayal." - The New York Times "Alagna is totally at home in the role of Don Jose, creating a searing portrayal of an upright soldier undone by his feelings."- Associated Press "Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin led a muscular, fiery performance; the overture, played at breakneck pace, set the tone for an exciting evening." -Wall St. JournalWEDNESDAY, JUNE 19 at 7 p.m.*
