Participating artists Gyun Hur, McKendree Key, Heidi Lau, Freya Powell, and Keisha Scarville will examine loss as a catalyst for self-discovery, its cultural and social associations, and the politics of death and dying.

BAM presents Word. Sound. Power. 2020: Border/less, its 16th annual celebration of spoken word and hip-hop. Following the success of last year's sold-out performances, an additional night is added to the concert lineup. The three-night showcase features a stunning roster of groundbreaking poets, musicians, and dancers who demonstrate the vitality of hip-hop and spoken word. Artists include emcees Nejma Nefertiti, Circa '95, and Dizzy SenZe; poet Peggy Robles-Alvarado; internationally acclaimed Dutch choreographer and dancer Nedda Sou; musician Robotron; and DJ Reborn. The highly anticipated showcase will take place on April 23a?"25 at BAM Fisher.

Centering the struggles of indigenous people and communities of colora?"from Cuba to Palestine to Senegal and beyonda?"this galvanizing program examines the myriad ways in which artists have deployed cinema as a tool for social action. The series precedes BAM's upcoming run of Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles' explosive anti-colonial thriller Bacurau (2019), opening March 13. (Separate release to come.)

CPR - Center for Performance Research, which supports the development of new works in contemporary dance, performance and related forms has announced the curator for its 2020 New Voices in Live Performance (NViLP) series: Benedict Nguyen. NViLP is an annual curatorial program that invites a curator/artist/collective to organize a weekend-long program of public events at CPR addressing a particular inquiry within the expanded field of dance and performance, demonstrating a sense of research and serious play around the proposed theme. the corpus is exquisite, the equinox is vernal (ceev) will occur March 27 - 29, 2020 at CPR, serving as a mini weekend-long residency for movement makers Malcolm-x Betts and Ogemdi Ude, with the support of collaborator and astrologer Stephanie George, featuring public showings, workshops, and discussions showcasing vital elements of their process.

Irish Arts Center, the multidisciplinary center dedicated to bringing people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of Irish arts and culture, co-presents Shrines (Carrie Erving) with National Sawdust at National Sawdust on Wednesday, February 19. Shrines - the moniker for Brooklyn-based singer, composer and musician Carrie Erving - mixes dance and visual design elements with ethereal vocals, string arrangements, synth drones, and electronic flourishes in an evening of original songs from her debut EP, Release, produced by Rosana Cabán (of Psychic Twin). The EP draws on influences from her eclectic background in opera, rock, Irish folk, and electronic music. She'll also perform selections from her forthcoming album Our Ship is Ready, a collection of reimagined songs from the Irish Sean-nós song tradition. Shrines has drawn comparisons to Sylvan Esso, Björk, and Sinead O'Connor.

Community Exercises for Sanctuary Spaces is an interdisciplinary work for five performers using movement, original text and sound to unearth how emulation and impersonation can function as a coping mechanism for navigating modern systems of gendered power dynamics and homophobia. Drawing explicit connections between the benediction of the blessed sacrement in Catholic Mass tradition, and the ritualistic nature that builds certain queer communities through mutual adulation for female icons and shared trauma, we show how the psychological understandings of how this type of fantasy and worship both helps and hinders the development of these social understandings.

Center for Performance Research to Receive $15,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

CPR - Center for Performance Research, which supports the development of new works in contemporary dance, performance and related forms, has been approved for a $15,000 Art Works grant to support Artistic Residencies in 2020. CPR's Artists-in-Residence and Technical Residency programs provide low-cost, high-quality space to the development and presentation of innovative dance and performance. Overall, the National Endowment for the Arts has approved 1,187 grants totaling $27.3 million in the first round of fiscal year 2020 funding to support arts projects in every state in the nation, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
