Did we ever find out what happened to Margo?

I do like bumping threads from a while ago. It's fun.

Because, unlike some people, I don't like to start new threads like crazy.

What did happen to Margo? I loved reading his posts.

Anyway, I'd rather see Peters in Mame than Hello, Dolly. But that's just me.

I love HELLO DOLLY. It's one of my favorites. So, I'm partial.

Oh, Margo, come back!

If Margo comes back, don't ever mention the "B" word to him in relation to "Hello, Dolly". I got creamed when searching for information, blocked and all...Thought it amusing.

Bernadette Peters would be a perfect Dolly Levi. There were conversations for television show for Ms. Peters a couple of years ago. Guess that was tabled?

So embarrassingly I've only recently (as of last night) seen this show/become familiar with it. The first thought I had was how perfect a role this is for Bernadette. I know I would like to see her in anything, but this role in particular suits her age, voice and humour.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

It is bittersweet to see Margo Channing's posts.  He is sorely missed.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I lurked long before I joined this board. I still remember his review of Grey Gardens at Playwrights Horizons - a sore disappointment, but that changed when it transferred. I hope he will return someday.

As for Dolly, Patti is much more suited to the role. I would love Bernadette as Mame or even a revival of Dear World. She has an interesting presence that only works on certain characters. I would never cast her as Dolly personally, but some might enjoy it.

And Broadway rumors have it that Bernadette Peters might be the one to play Hello, Dolly! when star Bette Midler can’t make it. If so, their ad campaign should be “Feel The Bern.”

Would a star, near-legend, of Bernadette's status really take such a position?

"

It's true that up until this point Bernadette has not really taken a stage role on Broadway that does not give her the complete limelight (except for her beginnings). But at nearly 70 years old perhaps this opportunity fits perfectly with her vocal ability, stamina, and other commitments. I could see Bernadette doing it before Audra.

I think to discredit her significance because she isn't a superstar outside the theatre community is a bit unfair.

Sometimes I forget that she's nearing 70! I would be surprised if it ended up being her but hey anything's possible.

If it is Bernadette (and please let it be) Lord bless us with bonus tracks of her Dolly Levi on the cast recording we'll most-likely be getting.

In the last 70 years, exactly what Broadway female musical stars were 'a legend outside of the theatre community'?  I can't think of anyone other than, maybe Angela Lansbury (and, despite her amazing portfolio, that is mostly due to the success / duration of Murder She Wrote at a certain age)..

I guess that Ethan Merman would qualify, since her music was the popular music in those days, but she certainly was not a movie legend or a TV legend.  If Broadway didn't exist, no-one would have heard of Mary Martin, whose national fame was made by Peter Pan.  Outside of Broadway / Broadway show tours, she was almost a two hit wonder: Peter Pan and the show with Ethel Merman.  She was a Broadway legend.  Period.  Same for Carol Channing, who was certainly well known, but mainly for touring with Hello Dolly.  One Oscar nomination doesn't qualify.

Bernadette is better known outside of the theatre community than, dare I say, Patti Lupone or Audra MacDonald or Chita Rivera or Sutton Foster or...

My point is that there are arguably maybe two, and one is dead, one is 90.

I was going to use Chita as an example. She's had nary a famous film or TV role due to her consistent dedication to the stage, but she is a Legend if there ever was one.

Bernadette is well known from back in the day with her movie roles but obviously is a legend when it comes to Broadway.

I'd love to see 70-ish Peters do the matinees of Dolly, with her own rack of Bob Mackie bosom-accentuating gowns.

Honestly, I'd rather see Bernadette over Bette (even though I love her too).  I think that this would be a nice part for her, but I have to agree with some of the posts saying that she may not want to share the role.

I'm a little surprised by the amount of hate that she sometimes receives on here.  She's a first rate Broadway diva of the highest breed and I really want her back on the stage in some part even if it isn't Dolly.

I never get some of the criticism either. People seem to criticize the state of her voice frequently yet somehow give a pass to divas who can't sing at all either late in their career or ever (e.g., Channing,  Stritch, Chita etc.) - I find it very bizarre. But I assume the general public are still on board given her frequent concert dates and given she holds the record of starring in the highest-grossing week of any Sondheim show ever on Broadway.

regardless of who it is, they're not doing the matinees. Their one performance a week will be on Tuesday evenings & then filling in for any of Midler's scheduled vacations.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Bette Midler is a smart woman. I find it odd that she would allow a name like Peters to be her standby, letting the floodgates open for Bette vs Bernie online and in the press, comparing the two performances.
