Totally disagree. Found Lee Pace to be brilliant in every way, worthy of a Tony nom for sure. I was less impressed by James McArdle. Had a lot of trouble warming up to his Louis at all. Frankly, I found it hard to believe that both Prior and Joe would be so taken by him.

Much of the production's charm is in its intimacy- so I wouldn't necessarily say this one/that one belongs on Broadway more.

I saw it Friday evening and thought it was quite excellent. Both leads are a breath of the freshest, freshest air, and, though the party scene (particularly Romeo's "costume") do come off as a bit hokey, I was into it. Daphne Rubin-Vega is doing very exciting work as the Nurse- a completely new take ala Sofia Vergara. The costumes are very modern and SO chic (I would happily take the entire male wardrobe and put it in my closet). The later scenes in act 2 in the Capulet house are WILDLY intense-

The casting possibilities are endless. These roles are all so fabulous and so fun. I could sit around for literally hours thinking of all the incredible performances various actors/actresses might give in these roles. I hope the cast lives up to the material, as I'm sure they will.
I kind of hate that Bob Martin won't be playing the lead, though I realize Rush's involvement is how this is coming to fruition. Perhaps Martin could play one of the gangsters.
Love this musical so

I find myself almost wanting to disagree with myself even so, as I still have trouble faulting casting one has never seen based exclusively on looks and nationality. I don't care who didn't get the role. This is still a show we've never seen and a role we've never seen played in the hands of a director and an actress who have proven themselves together in terrific ways in the past.

I'm completely understanding of the viewpoint and agree that it is certainly frustrating when you look at it in that regard. Though I do have confidence in O'Hara's acting abilities and, above all, in her voice, which I hope will do the wonders I'm anticipating with JRB's music.
