I wonder how much money Funny Girl will lose waiting for Lea.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Very very very happy to see “Phantom” maintaining good numbers.

In terms of the Tonys impact, MJ has seen the greatest reward. Consistently above 1.6 for every 8-show week since the Tonys.

I came here to say the same thing!

I wonder if DEAR EVAN HANSEN will take down their closing notice -- especially now that TKAM isn't coming in?

I think these higher numbers are almost exclusively related to Gaten M. There aren’t a ton of other star actors who would be willing to come into this and would have equal or greater impact. The show has simply run its course — but nice that they can go out on a high note.

They can't. Even the cancellation of the unannounced show at the Schoenfeld isn't greenlighting an extension of Come From Away.

I still think it's the Gaten Matarazzo effect coupled with a closing announcement. If he left and they took away the impending closing, I think it would fall back down to where it was around the time of the announcement.

I was hoping Funny Girl would do a little better for Julie's first full week but I guess it's to be expected.

I don’t think it’s Tony’s impact rather than it’s tourist season and it’s a big tourist show.

Huh?  What does one have to do with the other?  Come From Away hasn't seen anywhere near the uptick that DEH has (even it most of it may be from the casting of Gaten Matarazzo).

Strange Loop is in trouble. I'm sure the theater owners are looking for their next show.

“Strange Loop” has some major star power producing it. I’m curious if there’s any chance for them to get a “name” or two to do a short run as one of the Thoughts, to boost interest/sales.

I find it interesting that with nothing coming into the Schoenfeld that CFA isn't extending until the end of the year.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Careful, some people around here don't like that kind of talk. And yet, ASL keeps dropping every week.

A few weeks ago, I did a deep dive into recent Best Musical winners to see how they typically fare at the box office at this point in the summer after winning the Tony. Let's do another comparison of these shows looking at the first performance week in August the year they won Best Musical (I skip over HamiltonDear Evan Hansen, and Moulin Rouge! for reasons explained in my last post linked above):

2022 - A Strange Loop | Week ending August 7, 2022
Gross: $645,832
Average ticket: $108.09
Top ticket: $373.00
Capacity: 7,296 / Attendance: 5,975
Capacity Filled: 81.89%

2019 - Hadestown | Week ending August 4, 2019
Gross: $1,324,130
Average ticket: $177.93
Top ticket: $449.00
Capacity: 7,344 / Attendance: 7,442
Capacity Filled: 101.33%

2018 - The Band’s Visit | Week ending August 5, 2018
Gross: $976,256
Average ticket: $117.45
Top ticket: $297.00
Capacity: 8,312 / Attendance: 8,312
Capacity Filled: 100.00%

2015 - Fun Home | Week ending August 2, 2015
Gross: $782,634
Average ticket: $130.96
Top ticket: $280.00
Capacity: 5,920 / Attendance: 5,976
Capacity Filled: 100.95%

2014 - Gentleman’s Guide | Week ending August 3, 2014
Gross: $950,133
Average ticket: $129.76
Top ticket: $327
Capacity: 7,256 / Attendance: 7,322
Capacity Filled: 100.91%

It think it's safe to say that a Best Musical winner should typically expect to still be selling out the house by the first week of August in the year it wins the Tony, about two months after the awards ceremony. A Strange Loop is doing really badly on this front at only 81.89% filled.

Interestingly, A Strange Loop sold almost the exact same number of tickets that Fun Home did in this comparison (5,975 vs. 5,976 tickets). And yet, Fun Home still made over $100k+ more in gross sales and also quite literally couldn't have sold any more tickets than that, since it was at the venue's SRO capacity. A Strange Loop had over 1,300 unsold tickets this past week.

If A Strange Loop can't sell out the house the summer after winning the Tony, there's virtually no hope for it by the wintertime. Either they need to drastically revamp their marketing, put a star in the cast, or I personally predict they will close by New Year's.

I love A Strange Loop dearly but it seems it's not for most people in this world. I want it to be, I want everyone to see it, I want high school kids to see it, older conservatives to see it, everybody!

The reality is that it's for a small, unique audience. I think it's such a brilliant show but it's not Phantom, it's not limitless and massively appealing.

Since I’m one of the people you’re referring to:

What I said last week was that there was no value in repeatedly harping on the fact that their numbers were lower than past Best Musical winners: it was a worthwhile observation to make, but then it was made. There are a number of identifying variables that probably attributed to it, and that’s that.

And I said that the grosses were healthy enough on their own terms, considering the variables, so until the numbers were no longer healthy, there was no point in calling the coroner.

But I’ll concede that this week’s gross does not seem healthy. It’s probably the first time since the Tonys that they ran below, or just above their running cost. So I do agree that it’s worth noting.

I wonder if a ASL could replace Passion as the shortest run of any Tony-winning Best Musical? I don't wish for it to close though, and there's star power involved that could somehow help keep it running.

On a more positive note, The Music Man has hit $ 97.361 million  (per Playbill) after 357 performances (including previews)!  It should hit $ 100 million in Gross Receipts after the end of this coming week - it will need only $ 2.638 Million to do that..  Then there will be a one-week break ( they are not selling tickets as of now) when Hugh Jackman presumably takes his break.

Edit: Sorry for the error - it should be 247, not 357 performances.

I heard from a cast member that the stop clause was pulled for CFA and producers wanted to continue it well into next year. Producers have the money to do it and were not happy that they were being forced out before they were ready to end it.

The Schoenfeld is booked through next spring but productions haven’t announced yet. They have a limited holiday run and then another play in spring

That was exactly my thought. I think it's the summer travel season and many people are finally feeling comfortable to travel again. Frankly, it feels like the Tony's are having less and less impact every year.
