Rene was outstanding but the movie is terribly weak - there are a few moments of brilliance ( one scene in particular that I don't want to spoilt) but overall I was terribly dissatisfied with the film.  Was expecting more.

Well now, I'm not gonna talk about Judy. In fact, we're not gonna talk about Judy at all, we're gonna keep her out of it.

Saw the film in a neighborhood theatre (Not from here). Sparsely filled, mostly elderly, several walked out after 30 minutes. I sympathized but stayed to the end. Mostly dour and unpleasant, but one witty line (deliberate) which was kind of lost in the bleakness. Spoiler? Someone looking out for Judy's best interests asked if she could do anything besides singing?

Loved Rene Zellweiger in it. She really pulled it off. Much better than End of the Rainbow which was tragic. I think this was  more truthful

See if for Zellweiger's performance. Uncanny. Some missteps for example: Lorna has blue eyes and the young lady who played her had brown eyes. The young Judy wasn't the best find but she was fine. Liza did not look like Liza. However they nailed Joey Luft!!

See it. A stunning performance by Zellweiger And it wasn't tabloid trash the way I felt End o the Rainbow was.

I was fortunate enough to catch Tracie Bennett as Judy in Under the Rainbow. That play was awesome! It was all I needed.

END OF THE RAINBOW.  The playwright himself has said the film JUDY is based on fact unlike his play, which he states is pure fantasy.  He was part of the film’s development and loves it.

Saw it tonight. Oh my the tears! I was so moved. Judy is the reason I love this world of show business in the first place. Zellweger really pulled it off beautifully!

Very touching and not overdone about a very specific period of Judy’s life. It took me a bit to buy into her being Judy because the lady is so familiar and special but this brought her tragic end into focus .I remember the play being odd and saved by the mini concert at the end. This seems truthful and respectful and so it’s very very sad. Certainly the best of the celebrity bio flicks of the past few years.

Zellweiger gives s largely one-note performance, not much deepth or weight. What you see in the first 10 minutes is exactly the same thing you see for the next 90 minutes...,and not being a force of nature herself, her singing is at moments embarrassing especially when everyone around her is describing it as this rare god-given gift to the world.

A slog of a film to endure.

I thought Zellweger portrayed her exactly right---including her singing. She was a broken woman at that point in her life. Her vocal virtuosity was also gone.It all rang true, despite the film's overall lackluster appeal.

At last, a voice of reason. While not as offensively bad as I imagined it to be, it doesn’t amount to much. The flashback scenes were particularly laughable, with the sinister, menacing figure of LB hovering over a young Judy in shadowy corners, delivering deliciously campy warnings before vaguely stroking her breast. This thin biopic will soon be forgotten, even if she undeservedly wins the Oscar. She is committed, but the writing and her barely adequate singing fail her.

Having seen End Of The Rainbow and this I can make a fair comparison . Enjoyed the movie and Renees performence a lot .Should bag an Oscar for it. Rainbow was over the top re her drug use whereas Judy did not lay it on with a trowel as Rainbow did . The segments re Louie B Mayer were spot on and laid the groundwork for the whole movie. Currently reading a huge bio on Mayer. It is a tough slog but so was her life. The end of the movie was great but no idea if it actually happened like this. All in all one of the better biopics . Rarely post as no.longer attend for financial and health reasons. If and when I can contribute will

I did not care for this film or Zellweger in it.  The film is a meandering bore and I thought Zellweger, though she tried, failed to emanate the energy and showmanship Garland had, even in her final days.  I also thought her performance was Zellweger-mannered at times rather than Garland-mannered.  There is a difference.  The persona was off-key, as was the film.

Overall, I like Renée but thought the screenplay was lackluster. There’s very little new ground to tread. It’s like beating a dead horse. I understand why Liza and Lorna distance themselves from it. The question I have was Judy really always such a mess? She’s portrayed as pathetic in so much. It’s really exhausting.

I did appreciate the handler character who communicated compassion and empathy rather than eye rolling or irritation. It seems people were drawn into her fragility to either care for her or exploit her.

SPOILER!!!!! Was the piece about the gay couple true? I found that bit incredibly pandering if it’s constructed. If it’s not true I find it incredibly manipulative and odd personally. Was it thrown in to pander to gay men? It seemed out of place. The fans she latched onto due to loneliness didn’t need to be two old queens.

I like Renée and was glad she didn’t try to mimic but I think her makeup and prosthetics did the heavy lifting. She doesn’t sound like Judy and at times she didn’t remind me of Judy. Actually some of her mannerisms and delivery reminded me more of Charles Busch.

However I did like the film and I think Renée deserves acclaim but I’m not as over the moon as others.

I understand why Liza and Lorna distance themselves from it.

They did when the film first went into production and no one had any idea what tone the film would have.  Due in part to the positive response the film is garnering, they both have changed their tune.  They both now agree to not see the film as it would be painful to them though they are happy it is bringing attention to their mother’s memory to a new generation.

Hate the film or not, there has been an obvious increase in interest of Judy Garland’s films and music catalog.  YouTube views of her work has increased as well.

I feel like Zelwegger is easily winning an Oscar. So far Actress is less competitive than Actor this year and I feel like there are many scenes that traditionally Academy voters will love and immediately want to give her the Oscar especially the last scene.

Personally I thought it was OK film with a great performance. I'm just talking Oscar chances.
