I'm pretty sure the only reason this is happening is because Lin now has the power to pursue a passion project like this. Without him I doubt this would be greenlit. So I still think 'why not DEH' is a silly question when it very much seems like this will be LMM's baby.

Yes there will likely be a DEH film one day (although 10 years seems optimistic and it definitely wouldn't be happening anytime now) but it will be a completely different thing and Levenson is the only person here that would likely be involved.

This. And, with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing Lin's passion project, it now gives them leverage if they have a project that they really want him involved in. And who knows, maybe it will a) be successful, b) get awards attention, or c) both.

TTB is an odd choice for a movie, it's such an offbeat show and the plot is, well, thin. Sometimes non existent.

That being said, I'm happy it's being directed by someone who clearly adores it, who has played the role before, and who has a documented success making things work when they really shouldn't.

I'm a big fan of TTB so colour me intrigued.

I'm a bit skeptical of letting Lin-Manuel Miranda direct this. Nothing against the guy (I think he is very talented and charming) but he doesn't have any directorial experience. I feel like Hollywood is using this guy as much as possible because he's hot right now and teens adore him. And just because somethings are popular and work with theater, doesn't mean it translate into a good movie.

Netflix released a bunch of clips today for their new movies in 2021, and even though it is literally one second long (37 seconds into it), just wanted to share it for those interested.

Can Andrew Garfield sing? This could be interesting. I like Garfield and Bradley Whitford.

I love the entire cast, and Andrew can carry a tune but he is not on pare with the rest of the cast in terms of singing which includes Vanessa Hudgens, Joshua Henry, Robin De Jesus and Alexandra Shipp. They needed a name for the movie to even get off the ground since it won't have a massive audience, so Andrew was picked.

Is this a case where the lead role isn’t too vocally demanding then?

Well....Lin has done the role. Not that I thought he was good at it. I guess it's not that demanding vocally, although I love the recording with Raul Esparza.

What's the source for your statement about why Andrew Garfield was cast?  Did Lin call you with the news or are you just running your mouth?

Raul is such a powerhouse singer and to my ears does not feel under-utilised singing the score. But if Lin could pull it off fine I will take others' word for it that it can work with a lesser voice. TBH it seems to be the rule rather than exception for filmed musicals to have weaker voices than stage counterparts so I for one I am kind of used to it.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

The only pictures of this movie that have come out are the ones shot by bystanders during filming. I guess it's in post-production or complete with Netflix waiting to announce a release date.

Lin is not a singer or an actor. Great writer. And I love this show but wish he had not starred in it.

In a reel of Netflix films coming out in 2021, it showed Andrew dancing and singing.

Netflix tends not to promote films until right before they come out. We probably won't get a trailer until a couple weeks before the movie's out.

Oh that's right, they did release a snippet of the movie. I hope Andrew Garfield does a really good job as Jonathan.

Wow! Exciting to have an update. I can't decide if this is seems super cheesy, or super charming, or maybe some mix of both. But in any case, I'm definitely interested. Fun to see the many cameos in there.

The small snippet of Garfield singing in the beginning is somewhat encouraging.

That was a really good teaser; Andrew has a pretty decent singing voice which is nice, and the movie itself has this charming, almost indie feel to it. It looks solidly directed and shot, which makes me believe that Lin Manuel Miranda might do a pretty good job for his directorial debut.

I am feeling all the feels.

And not to beat a dead horse, it also makes me wonder what a film adaption of Rent directed Lin Manuel Miranda could've looked like.

Damn that teaser looks fantastic. Just the right about of artsy/indie. And I think Andrew will do fine vocally - don't forget that Larson originally wrote and performed it as a one man show. And if you've seen the footage of him singing it.... his voice is certainly not a traditional broadway voice. More like Lin's.

Overall I'm really excited after seeing this.

Curious about Joshua Henry's role though. Hope it will be one that lets his vocal chops show off a bit. And in general I hope they are willing to adapt and change TTB as needed. The show has some absolutely fantastic songs, and great moments, but overall really lacks cohesiveness.
