Do Broadway shows tend to send out merch/music samples/something else to Tony voters ahead of the actual balloting deadline? I know that movie and TV producers send out the For Your Consideration DVDs and information about the show/movie, but I was curious if anyone knew if Broadway shows tended to do the same. If so, what kind of things get sent out?
(Apologies for the title; I couldn't think of a better word for what I'm describing.)
If I remember correctly, they USED to, but then it was verboten and no longer a thing. I want to say that happened around the year of the Wicked/Avenue Q Tony Awards. (Right after) I think NOW they are allowed to send a script and the cd (for a musical)
Of course, I could be off entirely, and you know the board will let us know.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
It varies by show, but my manager is a Tony voter and they're always sending our office packages from the different nominees. Typically its merchandise or a book that showcases the production values and acting in a show. Three Tall Women had a very nice one we got recently.
It depends on the show. At last year's Bway flea market, some shows sold the leftover/extra giveaways the show gave to Tony voters that season. I recall for Dear Evan Hansen last year it was a blue book with photos/info from the show.

You are off entirely. That rule went away last year and now anything goes.
Well,if the rule went away just last year, then I wasn't wrong ENTIRELY.
(and it's fine, I'm not feeling scorned or anything.)

That's interesting; I'm surprised it got cut off for a decade-plus. I knew there was a tradition of Opening Night gifts (some of which are pretty nice), so I figured there might be something ahead of the Tonys.
Anyone have pictures, for those who've seen the excess at Flea?
Not exactly the same thing, but I do remember hearing about the producers of Escape to Margaritaville sending Tony Nominators beach towels, beach balls, and stuff of that nature.
Yes, it is a show program and a letter inviting voters to see the show. There is usually more impressive merch distributed at other press events so it does not seem so obvious.
What voter exclusives were sent this year? I've gotten a Tootsie script from eBay, and I saw a Mockingbird program in a thrift store. I'm most interested in whether Gary sent out a script.
My avatar = A screencap from Avatar, arguably the greatest animated show of all
Shuffle Along sent out the 8-track soundboard recording. I’m glad something of that show was preserved somewhat professionally.
I can’t remember what else was given out for Legally Blonde, but a rough cut of the cast recording was sent out and then made its way online. Interesting to hear both the rushed and finished versions.

Same, I don't normally have a need to buy scripts of any plays I see, but Gary is one huge exception. Looking on Ebay, it just seems like Playbills and judy's last play Hir.
A little off topic, but I'm curious if it will ever get published as of how big of a flop it was. Do productions that go to Broadway and not do so hot have less of a chance of getting published?
Id be shocked if it isnt published. In the scheme of things, its much less expensive than a cast recording and, I believe, the publisher usually takes on the cost.

Dramatists Play Service will be handling the licensing for Gary, so eventually you'll be able to order the acting edition through them even if there's not a formal publishing through TCG (who seem to be the main ones publishing scripts days).
Having been to the Broadway flea market every year for the past few years I can safely say there is a great variety of Tony voter items and opening night gifts that I was lucky enough to pick up every year. Some of the more interesting items include the great comet Tony voter box including the hard cover book a letter and a gorgeous foldout out poster. Dear Evan Hansen Tony voter bluebook along with a special purse made by the producer for gifts to the cast The bands visit gorgeous soft cover a book with pictures and details of the making of the show along with special coasters.Angels in America oversized Tony voters book.Three tall women gorgeous soft color book. Mean girls oversized large pamphlet with Lucite stand. Hello dolly flip book at a dollar apiece !!I bought a dozen! Hello dolly champagne glasses. All at great prices !

i found thr Tony Voters CD at the flea market last year!! I have the Legally Blonde Tony Voters CD. I also have this program type thing that Waitress gave out.
The Tony voters are basically picking favorites from what I can see. Stephanie is great but a drag queen could have played Cher..it wasn't a great performance it was basically an imitation ooooohhh ...it wasn't award winning and she won because she has been so good for so many years ..this was her time for the payback,, another example of it being a pretty meaningless award ( Caitlin Kinnunen deserved this 100 percent for a full rounded 100 percent original character)
