Encore performance today, this time on an IMAX screen. Enjoyed it even more of the second time. The emotion, the energy, and the performances exploded on the big screen. While I have a few quibbles with the plot rewrites, I’ll save those for when everyone has had a chance to see it, and none detract from the experience.

I saw this yesterday during the Mother's Day previews. I had a really good time. I still think the show (and the movie) have some lengths in the 2nd act (and to a degree, the movie takes care of them), but it is still a long movie for what the story is.

The changes that were made to the story were not necessarily my favorite. I love "Blackout" in the show, in the movie it is significantly cut down.

I did like the little Hamilton reference in this.

for anyone else who has seen an early screening, did you feel that the movie was a little too long?

Yes...very.  It didn't help that the large drink I had tortured my bladder.  I had to get up 4 times.  A record for me!  I'll rewatch on HBO Max for the minutes I missed.

Things I think could've been cut:

Click Here To Toggle Spoiler Content

All of the piragua guy stuff

The Dreamer Protest

I get it's done to add character motivation - but the designer stuff wasn't necessarily needed either

I also wonder why they somewhat ret-conned the timeline of this whole thing. Because now this is all happening over the span of a few weeks.

Early reviews have come out and RT has a 97% so far. Pretty great start if you ask me.

We’re at a point where Lin-Manuel Miranda can literally drop a turd and people will eat it up.

No we're not. You didn't see such hype for Mary Poppins Returns. Moana didn't become the second Frozen. In the Heights just happens to be one of his best work. Lin's upcoming movie Vivo is looking pretty weak (hope I will be proven wrong, but I'm not impressed by the trailer), and I don't expect people to "eat it up".

Not to mention: In the Heights is the show was put LMM on the map. The material became beloved in the theatre community on its own merits, so why should we assume that the film is any different?

Did his Hamilton fame help to resurrect the film from development limbo? Sure. Is his name helping them market the film? Of course. But there's no reason to suspect that people ENJOY it other than for its quality, when the same material (in a slightly different form) won a ton of awards and ran for several years solely because it was good.

I'm looking forward to Vivo, i enjoyed Mary Poppins Returns and i love Moana more so than Frozen.

I am not a diehard LMM fan. I’m even okay if I never see or hear Hamilton again. That said, I loved this film. I think it’s well done and it’s going to be the perfect summer movie for 2021. Maybe people actually enjoy the film because it’s a good movie.

Anyway, Moana > Frozen in just about every way.

For me, as far as long-term listenability goes, In the Heights > Hamilton. I’ve been listening to ITH consistently since 2008, where Hamilton has already overstayed its welcome in my rotation in just under 6 years.

Hamilton is more satisfying as a story though, and seeing it for the first time is still vividly burned in my mind. My experience of having seen ITH live has all but faded in my memory. ITH’s book is its weakest spot and it sounds like the movie struggles there as well. Even the best reviews of the movie point out that Hudes’ screenplay is a bit slapdash.

I've tried to watch Hamilton on Disney+ but I just... I couldn't get into it. In The Heights has always been more my jam in terms of LMM shows even if I have a lot of problems with the story in the stage show. I can just much more immerse myself in it.

Supposedly the film's release has now been moved up another day. The In the Heights social media handles say in their bios that the film will be "in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBOMax on June 10." The soundtrack, however, is still set for release the following day at the moment.
