Mystery of Edwin Drood - Voting Logistics Dec 16

The Broadway revival revealed the vote tally when exiting Studio 54. So they did rely on the ensemble for the numbers, whether they were accurate or not.
The lovers are typically voted by applause, I believe, but not the detective. I remember the final performance on Broadway had the rare scenario where Rosa and Helena were the lovers.

Home for the Holidays, hands down. The Liza/Alan Cumming duet alone makes it a must-listen every year.

Can it not be the same? Because there’s nothing in Company that can happen to only white people. People of color experience everything that happens within the story. And with color conscious casting, we don’t ignore the fact that the character is black, Latinx, Asian, etc., so then the story that’s being presented is literally seeing a POC’s story onstage. People of color have a myriad of stories, just like white people. It’s not just stories of race issues, civil rights struggles, and prejudice

“Company has always attracted a very white audience, and I'm not really expecting that to change, regardless of who they cast.”
Imagine the audience Company would bring in if it had some POC principals. If people of color don’t see themselves onstage in revivals, why should they be interested in something that feels exclusionary? If white audiences will come either way because it’s Company, then diversify your cast in order to diversify you audience. This is the logic every single produ

Aren’t they changing the script either way? (Lines and lyrics have changed in every production since the original.)

Thank you, Falsettolands and YvanEhtNioj, for your insightful thoughts. I wholeheartedly agree.
In addition, what are they trying to say when all of the male suitors are white? At least the last two revivals didn’t present us with a trio of white women. It’s NYC in 2020 after all, and if your dating pool is a sea of white, that’s certainly not diversity.
Grammy Award Musical Theater Album Nov 20

The majority of the current Hadestown was released in a Grammy-nominated concept album, so the Grammys didn’t see her work as composer as being over 50% original.
The Musical Theater Album category was recently updated to include concept recordings, compilations of musical theatre music, cabarets, etc., so it’s a very broad category. I think the Harry Potter album fits in this category as it is music made/arranged for the theatre. And yes, it does belong in the list of nominees in my op

Moulin Rouge! is indeed eligible. It submitted in pop categories as well (ditto Hadestown in the folk/Americana categories).
Actors Weight Nov 4

Elphaba and Evan Hansen are character driven roles and aren’t necessarily supposed to be “attractive.” They are the underdogs to characters more supposedly beautiful. They shun Elphaba because of how she looks. Evan is “on the outside always looking in.” So it really would make sense to cast character actors in these roles.
The excuses on this thread are the same reasons people use to not cast people of color, feature people of normal body weight in the media, why beauty standards are s
LuPita2 said: "I don't know if it's being lazy, I guess whomever is in charge of casting has a certain idea of who Evan is. Perhaps that idea will change, I certainly think Evan can be any race, but the body thing won't change anytime soon."
And that’s what I call lazy casting and close-mindedness. There’s no good reason, especially if we can suspend our disbelief about everything else in the show.
LuPita2 said: "Evan has a certain look, which is evident in all the Evans around the world. Take it up with them."
I think looking at the type of actor typically cast in the role just speaks to the lack of creativity and homogenous casting, not the role itself. There is no textual evidence that Evan needs to be a certain size or color. Do people of all shapes not take Adderall? Do teens of all sizes not have mental health issues? Can a person of color or a person wit
Equity vs. Non Eq Tour Thoughts? Oct 20

Non-Equity tours rarely have AFM contracts for musicians, so that means musicians are also not protected under their own union. It really is more accurate to say a tour is nonunion.
Equity vs. Non Eq Tour Thoughts? Oct 20

Equity tours also employ union musicians, so the quality of the orchestra should be high. That isn’t to say that non-Eq shows have low quality performers on- or offstage, but union shows employ and protect professional performers (and you’ll likely get a larger orchestra). In addition, Equity tours aren’t just for young actors before they make it on Broadway; in fact, you will find seasoned adult performers in all Equity shows, where they have the luxury of finding people of the correct age rang
Soft Power Previews Oct 3

I saw this the other night. Honestly, I think this is a must-see. It reminded me of A Strange Loop but from a Chinese American’s point of view. And how many shows can boast about having a full-size orchestra? I hear lots of changes are being implemented, so I’m curious to see how the show evolves during the preview process. But yeah, this is not one to miss. A really great score by Tesori and Hwang. The show is fascinating in every way and illuminates how limited the visibility of Asians onstage

I was at the performance tonight. It was indeed dedicated to the memory of Jessye Norman. This is a beautiful production with a top-notch cast. I saw the recent Broadway production, but after seeing tonight’s performance, I can’t imagine wanting to revert back to the “Broadway” iteration after hearing the full glorious opera. It’s so obviously written as an opera and meant to be sung like one. If you can, do try to see this one.
