NBC will present THE GRINCH musical this December starring Morrison  Dec 12 2020, 01:03:12 AM
When I’ve seen it onstage, the kids in the audience tried to help the Grinch say “Merry Christmas” when he can’t make out the phrase at the end of the show. In that moment, you knew the show had them under its spell. Quite magical, melting the coldest of hearts.

I personally think the material itself works. You get the essence and flow of the show from the cast album, so I recommend anyone new to the show to listen to that. Patrick Page is a Grinch more akin to the original animated version and John Cullum is a such a warm narrator as Old Max.

The problem with this TV version was in the really weird direction. The stage version presented the story as the book come to life, which included the red-and-white-only color scheme in the sets and costu

It’s on Hulu.

The book is much more concise onstage. They added and altered a lot here, probably to fill out the two hours. (It’s a zippy 90-minute musical.)

The framing device of the stage show is that Max is, how shall we put it, on his way out. He wants to remember his favorite Christmas one last time.

When the Grinch drops the rocking horse in “Mean One,” he drops it into the orchestra pit. That bit made much more sense onstage than however it was handled here.

I agree, I missed Young Max picking up the narration at the end, especially since they had to paraphrase the last line of the book with the Grinch now saying it.

Overall, I thought once it got to “It’s the Thought That Counts,” it really worked. It was messy and seemed like they only did one take of every number, but there’s such heart in the musical that can’t be denied.

Ah they added Where Are You Christmas! (This was a bonus track on the cast album, but it was never integrated into the musical.)

Cindy Lou is just darling. That number was so sweet.

They’ve also adapted the script to include more dialogue, which slows the pace. Several moments of lyric changes as well.

This loses all momentum with the commercial breaks. The first 20-30 minutes of the show are one big sequence that ends with the Grinch deciding to steal Christmas. The pacing here is hard to get past.

Yes, the musical is narrated by Old Max, originally played on Broadway by John Cullum, looking back at one particular Christmas in his past. It allows Max to voice the narrator of the book and also sing “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”

2020/1 Grammy Nominees  Nov 24 2020, 03:04:57 PM
I expect this to be between American Utopia (bolstered by the well-received HBO Max filmed version) and Jagged Little Pill (a former Album of the Year winner). It would be exciting to see the other albums be competitive though.

It seems with the composer and lyricist nominated, Amélie is 51% new material according to the Grammy powers-that-be.

I’m very happy to see Soft Power on the list. I was afraid it wouldn’t get into a field with bigger names available to check off. Even if you thought the show was odd, the score as preserved here is really lovely.

The Minutes and The Lehman Trilogy were supposed to open. I suspect it might have always come down to The Inheritance v Slave Play though.

Agreed, she was a phenomenal Cassie. Don't know if I'll ever see a better one unless I were to travel back in time to witness the original cast. I'm happy to Robyn Hurder included among the nominees; she was certainly a standout featured (if not supporting) performer in her show.

Studio Recordings vs. Live Recordings  Oct 14 2020, 11:38:10 AM
I can't imagine a better representation of the show than Movin' Out's live cast recording. I think it captures the energy of the live music and dance. (I do miss the show's prologue, though.)

Two successful live recordings came out this past season: American Utopia and Octet. I think the sound quality of both is really great. American Utopia captures the feel of an inclusive, bolt-of-energy theatrical concert experience. Octet displays the incredible skill of the cast, and the flaws mak

I gladly paid because you rarely see this kind of representation in Hollywood (can you name more than a handful of Hollywood films with all-Asian casts?). I also enjoyed the film, so that’s a plus. The older supporting cast is made up of Chinese screen icons.

I will happily support films like Mulan, Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, etc. It feels like films with Asian casts always have something to prove, like we need to feel grateful for the chance at representation instead of having t

I believe that’s what Diana is doing as well.
