Cuca (Polanco) was ancillary. She was used as backup comedy, but nothing major.
Anthony Ramos is the breakout star here. He's a young John Leguizamo. Charismatic. Handles the material like a pro and Chu occasionally allows the scene to linger just a little too long, but instead of Ramos lookingawkward, it's honest and charming.

Overall, the crowd loved it. Big reactions. Chu directed it well and used his usual bag of tricks to keep the story moving and visually interesting.
They still have B-roll and establishing shots to shoot and edit in. You can tell when watching it.

my twitter friend has seen a screening of the movie and she told me that it is incredible. she said that daphne rubin vega plays daniela perfectly. and she said that cuca played by dascha polanco is used mostly for comic relief. she doesn’t say much but she has some of carla’s lines and she sings a tiny bit too.

the backlash isn’t huge yet but some people are talking. some people are already criticizing the movie based on a two minute trailer. they thin

sadly the movie is getting backlash already. people are assuming that the movie lacks black latinx representation based on the trailer alone. washington heights is a very afro dominican neighborhood with tons and tons of dark skinned latinos. lots of black spanish speakers etc. and in the trailer, we barely see them so far. i see mostly light skinned. however, the movie isn’t out yet and it’s too early to pass judgment already. i am still excited for it. what do you think of the backlash?

i am very curious about dascha polanco’s character cuca. i wonder what she will bring to the storyline since she is a added member of the salon ladies. dascha polanco did say that cuca is the life of the party and a pillar of her community who loves the women she surrounds herself with. i hope we get to see expanded storylines for vanessa, cuca, carla and daniela.
Predicting a HUGE HIT HERE for Chu's vision of this rich timely musical. LMM made this in 1999 I think. Seems so so right for THIS MOMENT.Compared to West Side Story (where Latino's stab people) movie, I think In the Heights is RIGHT ON with being a stage-to-filmstory that is timely and right on.
Two white guys, remaking a CLASSIC West Side Storyabout Latinos seems no bueno to me."

If marketed and played just right, in the heights could be the biggest surprise of summer 2020. even above the big blockbuster movies and based on the trailer, i see a lot of awards potential for it as well. this movie will be so important to so many and it will be so representative of such a beautiful community.
