Lauren Ambrose is a classically trained opera singer. She was flawless as Eliza on the cast recording and in person. Her issues had nothing to do with her gorgeous voice.

If you are in starring role in a musical, you need to be able to sing the songs. Period.

People have different understanding of “singing the songs.” If Sondheim is fine with her singing, so am I. If you don’t enjoy her performance, then too bad for you.

Ha. I didn't say I didn't or did like it. I said the criticisms about the show were about her and her voice. People on this thread mentioned replacing her. Period.

Might I just observe that "this thread" is about whether the show will return. I don't understand why it has devolved into a discussion of who people like and don't like. (Actually, I DO understand why: regrettably it's what happens in every thread, if not about the actors then about the show itself.) So be it. FWIW I'll bet two house seats that anyone who does not return when the show does will not return by their own choice or circumstances.

I don't know why the cast would change... none of the actors with the exception of Patti LuPone (who's not going anywhere) seems to be very busy...

Katrina has actually been quite busy with TV work and has just joined the fourth season of Ozark. I hope she returns to Company when it reopens (hopefully this fall), I thought she was truly terrific as Bobbie

I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Anne Hathaway is brought into the cast when this reopens.

There were very strong rumors that Hathaway was in negotiations for the Broadway transfer, and they only fell through because of her pregnancy.

Given that Broadway will likely lean on huge names to sell strong advances and she was allegedly in negotiations with the producers before, her casting would make Company even more of an event and would probably lock her (along with LuPone) in for a Tony win.

It would probably be her first major appearance under the Annie Hathaway name. Apparently she’s been Annie her whole life but was advised to use the more formal name professionally; she recently stated that she’s secure enough in her career that she feels safe being Annie professionally and not just personally.

That would be incredible and so exciting. What a talent!

I doubt this. I don't think she was negotiating at the price point that is going to be on the table (even assuming there is a table) and I don't think, in the context of this show and the target audience for it in the fall of this year (assuming that's what we are talking about), there is all that much value added box office-wise.

While I’d certainly watch Anne Hathaway star as Bobbie, I’d be disappointed if I didn’t get to see Katrina Lenk trying her hand at this role, even if first reactions were mixed.

Personally, I believe so long as Katrina still wants to do the show and isn’t busy, she’ll be back. This show could be a big deal for her, as it would cement her star status on Broadway. And it’s not like her notices were that bad. She definitely did get her fair share of criticism, but I recall hearing several audience members being quite kind to her.

From what little I've read about Katrina (she is a very private person and not a media whore),she does want to come back to Company. She's done some other work this year, such a recurring role on Ozark, because she obviously had to,with no Broadway. I'm sure she likes to eat and have a roof over her head. And I say Good for her. I agree with all of your comment.

Speaking of Company,I saw my baby niece today, and I was playing with her and singing silly songs to her, mostly parody songs that I made up on the spot. She loved "Babies Who Lunch"! She's starting to laugh and she laughed at that one.

Just got off the phone with Patti Lupone and she said this,
“Company will try to come back like every Broadway show. Stop speculating which shows are coming back and which ones aren’t. Thanks, Patti.”
Wow, there u have it.

Yea. I thought it was weird too but... it’s Patti. I didn’t question her.

Sondheim was fine with the singing of both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. 'Nuff said.

While Lenk didn't have the drill-a-new-hole-in-your-ear kind of belt, her singing and acting were the right fit for the production.

I personally loved that her singing wasn't as brassy as her friends', it was aligned with the decisions Bobbie makes at the end of this production of Company.

DramaTeach said: "Someone mentioned the cast looking different. Having seen the show, the only cast member I’d like to switch is Katrina Lenk. The entire production was top notch and vibrant, but her Bobbi was not good (and I say this as someone who has adored her in other things). The voice wasn’t what it needed to be for her big realization and I’ve heard some people say they wanted more of an actress than a singer, but I didn’t find the emotion that great in the song either. And she seems too mature for the part. Just my two cents."

I was lucky enough to see this production just before lockdown, and I have to agree. Lenk is so incredibly talented, but this role is an uncomfortable match for her, vocally and character wise. Not bad by any means, just not totally right.

I just wish they’d take this time off to figure out keys that work for her. I thought the production was spectacular. Everyone was a knock out (maybe not “not getting married today” - thought he could have been funnier but it was a second preview). And Lenk was great in the book scenes but her “being alive” fell flat after Lupone’s “Ladies who lunch.” I also felt the staging in “Being alive” let her down. But her acting of the song was great. They just needed to find a key where she could really shine! Doesn’t have to be a big belt song but she seemed to struggle.

I felt as though both cast albums had their faults, like Raúl's instrumentals sound separate from the vocals and 2018 needs trained vocalists, getting married today was unbearable with all the lip smacking and nasal singing.

(The red 1970 album is what needs a proper reboot, I love the instrumentals with guitars, organs, and sound effects, but the vocals echo and get drowned out)

Someone made an interesting point about the West End "Company" obtaining pandemic insurance.  First, I wasn't aware there was such a thing to begin with.  Second, would any of the currently existing Broadway productions possibly  have pandemic insurance as well?

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

So Amy and Paul reverse roles so a man can sing this song?
