Children's Playhouse of Maryland Presents Disney's MULAN, Weekends of 3/5 thru 3/20

The Children's Playhouse of Maryland, Inc., in residence on the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, will perform Disney's Mulan, Jr. 1 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, March 5-6, 12-13, 19 and 20, with an additional 4 p.m. performance on Sunday, March 13, in the J Building Lecture Hall (J-137), CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for birthday parties or scout troops, and are available in advance by calling the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787) weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm; tickets are also available at the door, space permitting.

While issues around race and class are at the forefront of this play, it is ultimately about secrets, skeletons in the closet, and about dysfunctional family life.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. plays to be read are: Veteran's Day, by Judith Glass Collins, followed by inconstancy, by Bob Barr, at 1:00 p.m., and Familiar Strangers, by Margy Kahn at 3:00 p.m. After each reading there will be a discussion of the script with the playwright, director and actors. There is always a reason a warhorse gets to become a warhorse. Here, the fun stems from some reversals, a couple of sucker-punches to the expectations of both the characters and the audience, and the ebb and flow of the alliances and enmities around the jury-table. There are five logical set-pieces as well, each devoted to one evidentiary question. For each, further discussion reveals surprising aspects. These traits explain why the play continues to draw audiences the world over, for all the old-fashioned drawbacks.

The Baltimore Playwrights Festival (www.baltplayfest.com) announces the sixth public reading 'Marathon' of their 30th Season, to take place on Saturday, February 26th at The Strand Theater, 1823 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21201. Beginning at 11:00 a.m. five one-acts plays will be read, including Top of the Hour by Kitty Felde, The Rapier and the Rose, and The Unfinished Story, both by Steve Prevosto, The Chick Files by Sharon Goldner, and Protest by Adam Meyer. Each reading will be followed by a discussion of the script with the playwright, director and actors. The event is free, and the general public is encouraged to attend.
