Nexus Gallery Features Artist Talk, 10/21

By: Oct. 19, 2010

Encompassing time, place and personal experience, DISPLACED REPLIES: 15 explorations of "Middle-Eastern" identity is Adelaide-based artist Adrian Caon's latest solo exhibition, following previous exhibitions at Flightpath Gallery, Brunswick Street Gallery (Melbourne), the Barr Smith Library at the University of Adelaide, SASA Gallery and with the Platform Artists group in Melbourne.

DISPLACED REPLIES has had a long genesis. After World War 2, an unknown Australian soldier returned from the Middle East campaign with photographic film containing images of historical sites and then-current cities in Egypt, Palestine (now Israel / Palestine), Lebanon and Syria. Adrian Caon discovered the film in a second-hand bookshop on Unley Road some years ago and assembled an album of prints from the negative images. He then asked people from Middle Eastern backgrounds presently residing in Adelaide to express their thoughts and feelings in structured but informal interviews. The unknown soldier once returned to Australia with tourist images of distant lands; Caon has now invited Australian residents to revisit their former homelands through his images.

Adrian Caon will conduct an Artist's Talk in Nexus Gallery on 21 October, and DISPLACED REPLIES will be at Nexus Gallery until 19 November.
