The USM Department of Theatre will open their 2017-2018 season on the Main Stage at Russell Hall with the comic and disturbing modern horror story "Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom," which opens September 29.

Written by acclaimed playwright Jennifer Haley, "Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom" blurs the lines between reality and virtual reality, and draws attention to society's desperate need to communicate. Haley's work delves into ethics in virtual reality and the impact of technology on human relationships, identity and desire.

Directed by USM Theatre professor Dana Wieluns Legawiec, the main stage production features a cast of seven USM student actors playing multiple characters, moving between real life and the virtual reality of the game.

"'Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom' is a dark comedy in the horror genre that explores the tormented relationships between suburban teenagers and their parents," Legawiec said. "In a suburbia of perfectly manicuRed Lawns, identical houses and white picket fences, everything is not as 'under control' as it seems. The kids escape to a virtual world where they play a video game defending their neighborhood from zombies, while the parents struggle to maintain a connection to their children. As the lines blur, fantasies of destruction play out in the most horrific ways."

The USM Department of Theatre production of "Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom" runs from Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 8. All performances take place on the USM Gorham campus in historic Russell Hall.
