Origami Holiday Tree Returns to AMNH for the Holidays

By: Oct. 27, 2011

The delightfully decorated Origami Holiday Tree has marked the start of the holiday season at the Museum for more than 30 years. Inspired by the iconic blue whale (the largest animal in the world) displayed in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life and the current exhibition The World's Largest Dinosaurs, this year's Origami Holiday Tree decorations pay tribute to some of the largest and most impressive animals and inanimate objects found in the Museum's halls through. The tree features origami creations shaped like elephants, dinosaurs, a satellite, the Olmec mask, Mars, and more.

Volunteers began folding in July to complete the 500 creations that will be displayed on the tree. During the holiday season, volunteers will be on hand to teach visitors of all ages the art of origami paper folding. Past themes have included "Discovery," "Folding the Museum;" "Fantastic Creatures: Mythic and Real;" "Origami in Flight;" "Under the Sea;" "Pocket Posy;" and "Origami Safari."

WHERE The Origami Tree is located in the Grand Gallery.
