Richard Barone: SORROWS & PROMISES - GREENWICH VILLAGE IN THE 1960s

Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00PM

$18

Richard Barone's new album "Sorrows & Promises: Greenwich Village In The 1960s" casts light on the songs that sprang from the singer-songwriters in and around Greenwich Village during that pivotal decade. While Top-40 hit songs were being churned out uptown in the Brill Building and at 1650 Broadway, the downtown writers were weaving folk, blues, R&B and rock into songs that five decades later still sound fresh and inventive. Richard's choices cover a broad range of writers, from Buddy Holly, who was living and demoing songs in his Greenwich Village apartment just before he died, to up-and-comers like Paul Simon, John Sebastian (of the Lovin' Spoonful) and Janis Ian; to artists who were redefining folk music for a new generation: Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Tim Hardin, Fred Neil. Sorrows and Promises revisits and re-imagines these songs that were a vital contribution to the American Songbook, treating them like the modern standards they are.

The singer navigates the changes in her artistic work, her relationship with her husband and the new insane world of everything "baby" with equal parts humor and heartache. Leonhart is unflinching in her candor as she sings about conflict, loneliness and the anger that accompany the mother/artist collision. The show features original music by Leonhart and musical director Michael Leonhart, performed by an all-female band including Pauline Kim, Eleonore Oppenheim and Sara Budde. Estuary was created as a part of the New York Voices commission. Joe's Pub New York Voices series presents new works from critically-acclaimed performers commissioned by Joe's Pub and supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

As founder, guitarist, and main composer Dave Ricketts says, the band is "in love with the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers, as well as the stories, the life styles and the footsteps of hundreds of other great jazz, blues, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950's."

Morgan James

A microphone and a stage remain the only necessities. That holds true for New York-based soul singer, songwriter and Broadway chanteuse Morgan James. On Hunter, her full-length debut for Epic Records, she casts an unbreakable spell with a powerhouse voice, theatrical swing, and a soulful poise. James assumed co-writing duties on eight of the album's 11 tracks and even performed all of her own background vocals and harmonies - no tuning on any of it. Since Hunter's release, her music videos have accumulated more than 45 million (and climbing) views. ROB TOWNSEND

Rob Townshend writes songs and sings them. He plays guitar and piano too. You might call him a singer-songwriter, but he wouldn't because that word bums him out. Some guy's internet blog recently said you should "catch Rob before he's popular again," and another guy on YouTube said, "this shit is gay." VICE said ""When a large chunk of today's charts are made up of joyless minimal covers of former dancefloor bangers, it can sometimes feel like pop music has lost its vibrancy. But then something comes around, like a ray of sunshine through a dense canopy of trash, to remind you that music is actually alright."
