ArtMiami: Context was a big success - thank you to everyone who came out to see the work.
One of the most popular paintings in our booth was David Kassan's new work, Aunt Dale, which premiered at the fair. This virtuousic painting of the artist's aunt stands at over 6 feet tall. Kassan avoids heavy-handedness with his portraits - his masterful rendering of his model's features are at once precise and delicate. Small gestures, like that of his aunt's mismatched sleeves, further lend Kassan's models a sense of lightness and individuality. Of his own practice, Kassan writes, "My work is a form of meditation, a way of slowing down time through the careful observation of my environment. What intrigues me is the subtlety of emotion in the people who are its inhabitants. My paintings strive for reality, a chance to mimic life in both scale and complexity. The viewer is given an unbiased, eye level perspective of the subject in his or her most raw condition. It is my intent to control the medium of oil paint so that the image stands alone without evidence of the artist.Videos
