Khutjo Green and Craig Morris in BOYKIE AND GIRLIE

BOYKIE AND GIRLIE, a drama which premiered in July last year at the Wits Downstairs Theatre in Johannesburg as part of the SA Season of "Theatre and Politics" organized by Drama for Life, will makes its way to Alexander Bar next year.

BOYKIE AND GIRLIE have been together for several years, living in a comfortable but unfashionable flat somewhere in Johannesburg. They are no longer in the first flush of their lives; experience has roughened their edges. On this particular evening, Girlie returns home and once again finds Boykie in a foul mood. The past and the present collide and what ensues exposes their many different faces: values, ambitions, sexual needs and ability to love.

Writer-director of BOYKIE AND GIRLIE, Allan Kolski Horwitz grew up in Cape Town. Between 1974 and 1985, he lived in the Middle East, Europe and North America, returning to live in Johannesburg in 1986. Since then, he has worked in the trade union and social housing movements and continues to be a writer in various genres as well as being an educator, editor and activist. He is a member of the Botsotso Jesters poetry performance group and of the Botsotso Publishing editorial board. His books of poetry are entitled SAVING WATER and THERE ARE TWO BIRDS AT MY WINDOW, while his short fiction is contained in three collections, namely UN/COMMON GROUND, OUT OF THE WRECKAGE and MEDITATIONS OF A NON-WHITE WHITE. He has also written a children's parable entitled BLUE WINGS as well as four more plays: THE PUMP ROOM, COMRADE BABBLE, JERICO and BOOK MARKS.

The titular characters are brought to life by Khutjo Green and Craig Morris.

Green is a director, performer, writer, physical theatre artist and activist. She studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she attained her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Dramatic Arts. She had her first taste of performance in THE CAGE BIRDS, directed by Janet Jobson, with her subsequent professional theatre accomplishments including OLIVE TREE, BROKEN DREAMS, ITYALA LOMHLAWULO, BRER RABBIT, ECLIPSED, UHAMI AJI and STORIES FOR THE FUTURE. Green was awarded a Naledi Theatre award for Best Performance by Actress in a Lead Role for her performance in THE LINE in 2013.

Morris is a versatile performing artist and educator who includes physical theatre, mime, contemporary dance and clowning in his repertoire of theatre and film performance, directing, teaching and choreographic skills. He is continuously involved in numerous educational, commercial and corporate productions as a physical performer, movement training specialist, classical and contemporary mime artist, script writer and director. Morris continues to debut new and original theatre work, with the aim of provoking critical thinking and innovation.
