BWW Review: Gen Y's BAT BOY is a Nearly Perfect Halloween ProductionBWW Review: Gen Y's BAT BOY is a Nearly Perfect Halloween Production
by Matt Tamanini - Oct 16, 2015

There's really no getting around it, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is weird, albeit wonderfully so. It's an audacious musical comedy ripped from the headlines of a supermarket tabloid. Inspired by the on-going Weekly World News articles that began with 1992's 'Bat Child Found in Cave!,' the musical tells the story of a half-bat/half-boy creature feared and tormented by close-minded townsfolk, despite the fact that all he wants to do is learn to be human and find a home. Musicals don't get much weirder than that. But, it is for this very reason that Gen Y Productions has become the most exciting theatre company in Orlando in less than a year of operation. Not only are they willing to do shows that are outside the scope of traditional companies, but they also do them extremely well. BAT BOY, a cult favorite since it debuted Off-Broadway in 2001, is far from a perfect show, but Gen Y's version, directed by Kenny Howard and running through Halloween at The Abbey, just might be as perfect of a production as possible. BWW Review: Gen Y's Florida Premiere of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is 'So Very' and So Much MoreBWW Review: Gen Y's Florida Premiere of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is 'So Very' and So Much More
by Matt Tamanini - Aug 17, 2015

There is something killer going on in Orlando's theatre scene, and I mean that in the best possible way. Since debuting with a production of CABARET in January, Gen Y Productions has staged thrilling Florida premieres of two of New York's most buzzed-about new works, a risky proposition for a theatre company looking to build an audience. In June, it was a mesmerizing production of Pulitzer Prize-winner THE FLICK (read BWW's review), and now it is the devilishly entertaining HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL. The show runs through August 23rd at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and after attending last week's Opening Night, I think it is safe to say that Gen Y is quickly becoming my favorite theatre company in Central Florida. † (more...)

BWW Review: THE FLICK is an Envelope-Pushing Must-See for All Serious Orlando Theatre FansBWW Review: THE FLICK is an Envelope-Pushing Must-See for All Serious Orlando Theatre Fans
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 25, 2015

The vast majority of theatre, even straight plays, has an intrinsic musicality that has become an engrained part of the art form; characters speak with an expected rhythm familiar to regular theatre viewers, dialogue is paced with a conventional choreography to which the audience has grown accustomed. While most playwrights strive for a heightened level of lyrical poetry from their scripts, Annie Baker's THE FLICK, by design, has no rhythm, nor choreography, nor poetry; what it has is uncomfortable reality. Since its debut in 2013, THE FLICK, presented at The Dr. Phillips Center through July 12th by Gen Y Productions, has amassed a devoted following and a Pulitzer Prize, but has also drawn the ire of many theatre-goers, who, frustrated by its unorthodoxy, leave the theater before the show is over. While THE FLICK, directed here by Tony-winning producer Kenny Howard, does have the occasional profanity and risque topics, it is nothing compared to that of theatre greats like David Mamet or Tracy Letts; no, the objection to THE FLICK is not because of its content, but because of how its content is presented.
