Her (Helen Budge) and Him (James Clay) - brother and sister with an unprivileged upbringing of poverty - show what it means to live in a constant state of instability caused by depression and anxiety, in a place where everyone seems to be against them. It is through their eyes that Fleming's audiences see the actual overwhelming despair that comes when everything becomes too much to handle, and the play becomes a relevant, valid depiction of mental illnesses told in sincerity and with a no-nonsense attitude. Tramp's innovative, semi-immersive production reimagines Tennessee Williams' little known play in "Monk's Bar", a run-down British seaside bar on the Essex coast, frequented by life's flotsam and jetsam. When I first heard that a Catholic college, Saint Mary's College to be exact, was putting on the musical Chicago, I was skeptical. Knowing that Chicago is quite the risque musical with all types of salacious subject matter, I wasn't quite sure how they were going to pull it off. Well, let me be blunt, Saint Mary's did not look very Catholic this past Saturday night when I saw the second showing of the musical. (more...)
