On Tuesday May 21st at at 7 pm, Alexis Cole took us on a journey of songs celebrating New York City at 54 Below. I’LL TAKE NEW YORK: GREAT SONGS OF A GREAT CITY was a smooth, polished evening of intimate cabaret as Cole bounced from song to song, giving us a taste of classic songs performed expertly and interweaving personal stories throughout.

It’s baseball season in a baseball town, Red Sox caps are sprouting like spring flowers, and the Huntington is getting in on the act, too, with a crackerjack production of “Toni Stone,” a play about the first woman to play professional baseball on a men’s team, which will run through June 16 at the Huntington Theatre in its New England premiere.

It was beautiful and I am so thankful for that moment of being drawn into this world. The writing and performances were funny and heartfelt, and you should definitely experience it for yourself.

Directed by Bruno Guida and staring Daniel Infantini and Flávio Tolezani, the dramatic comedy by award-winning English author Neil Bartlett is inspired by a telegram sent by Irish writer Oscar Wilde to a friend in 1895, just a week before began the trial that would cost him his reputation, his freedom, his family and then his life.

Three couples find out they’re pregnant. One 30-something-ish couple, Pam (Heather Joy) & Nick (Jacob Samples) has been trying; one older couple, Arlene (Sonia Reavis) & Alan (Michael Pacas) had an oops; and a couple of college juniors, songwriters Lizzy (Candace Coe) & Danny (Joseph Portoles) are our main characters The story follows each couple’s reactions, and wouldn’t you know it, the girls are all connected by an obstetrician (Jason Ayestas) and his nurse (Katrina Dixon) and the boys by …little league? I don’t know - some sports thing.

I’ve always loved seeing plays at the Flipside at the Baxter. Something about observing a production performed in the actual backstage area of the theatre makes me feel like I’m on hallowed ground – I’m somewhere that is sacred, special and usually off limits to the public. These feelings became even more heightened during TROUBLE IN MIND.

Spring fever?  If you’ve been made a bit dozy by these warm spring days the new production at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis will, with a bang, hoist you wide awake in all your senses.  Rossini’s The Barber of Seville opened Saturday to an audience that packed the Loretto-Hilton theatre to the rafters.   

Port Jefferson’s historic Theater Three certainly has another hit on their hands with their current showing of the mega hit musical The Producers. Closing out their incredible 53rd season, the beautiful Long Island venue has assembled a brilliant cast to flawlessly deliver this Tony, Grammy, and Olivier winning Mel Brooks classic. Indeed, this thrilling production is a must see this exciting Spring season in the lively town.

Creative Cauldron stages a positively effervescent musical, THE BUBBLY BLACK GIRL SHEDS HER CHAMELEON SKIN, a coming-of-age story that ably balances light humorous moments with pointed questions of growing up a Black woman in the latter part of the 20th century.

Six professional actors meet as members of The Drunk Shakespeare Society. One of them has 5 shots of whiskey and then attempts to perform a major role in a Shakespearean play. Hilarity and mayhem ensue while the five sober actors try and keep the script on track. Every show is different depending on who is drinking... and what they're drinking!

The first show of Avril Lavigne’s Greatest Hits Tour played last week at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC to a sold out crowd. With Vancouver being her first show of the new tour, the excitement was high and a strong sense of nostalgia lingered in the air.

On May 25th, Olney Theater unveiled the world premiere of the musical Long Way Down at the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab. The piece was adapted from Jason Reynolds's novel of the same name, which has received accolades such as the National Book Award and a Newbery Medal, and was written (books, music, and lyrics) by Dahlak Brathwaite, with additional writing (books, music, and lyrics) by Khiyon Hursey. 

The Odd Couple is playing at The Comedy Theatre for a strictly limited season, through to June 23rd.

'Queen of the Night' written by travis tate and directed by Luca Pinner is billed as “a story of queerness, Blackness, masculinity and the challenges of camping with family.” It will definitely appeal to a broad audience.
